Default D16Y7 turbo

Everyone tells me not to waste my time doing this, that I should do an LS engine swap and I would be happier. My motor only has 70 thousand miles on it and I hate to yank it out. I guess I am wondering how cost effective it is to do either one. P.S. I want horsepower that isnt going to eat my wallet.
My car already has Apexi exhaust, Ractive header, ZEX Nitrous, K&N Intake, and a Centerforce dual friction clutch.

Jackson Racing makes a Supercharger for that motor. Stock-like reliability with decent HP numbers. Won't outrun a turbo, but it should be a good upgrade while maintaining relibality and mileage.

Talk to one of the moderators of this forum...Ricey McRicerton. He has a bone stock Y7 with a greddy turbo kit pushing 10psi and runs high 13's all day long.

Hate to be the bad guy but, I pulled my Y7 w/ 63,000 miles and went with an LS motor. And I really enjoy the power it gives me and the reliability of a NA stock motor that puts out good HP.

Never had a Turbo Y7 so...not sure what its like. I ran into the same question before i did my swap and i choose B18B cause i liked the possibilities it would give me. Up to you????

I run that turbo y7 setup with some other little goodies, but am on stock internals. As Bauley stated, I have run a 13.8@100mph on 10psi. I like it, and I still get almost 35 mpg. Click the image to open in full size. I STRONGLY suggest this setup as far as cost/dollar ratio. You may not have the greater expandibility of a turbo B series motor, but it is about half as much. my neighboor ran a greddy kit tuned with hondata on his stock y7 @14-15 psi. The car moved quite nicely ( i would guestimate mid 13's)

i was in the same position as you..unless you can buy a motor swapped for less than 1500 bucks installed...its not worth it, you can always crank up the boost and blah blah blah

im running a greddy kit myself, if i were to put a b16 mor b18 motor, it just seems like a dead end road for me since it would be expensive to build on it since ive already spend the money on putting the engine in

Good LS swap ; $2000+

Turbo Y7 ; $1500+

S/C Y7 ; $2500+

I love turbo and have been a SOHC'er forever, but a LS is temping. I'd still go Y7/Turbo.

It's all a matter of coinage and preference. If you have the coin, you might as well go with a higher displacement motor and built that thing up and then turbo that and make it all sick... but... most of us don't...

My d16z6 has been running healthily since 97 on turbo, of course running 13s or faster does require "other goodies" as mentioned which will definitely rack up the price over what u'd pay for ur 30% power gain from a greddy turbo kit for example.

The one thing i'd comment is, with a d-series block, ur torque is gonna almost match your horsepower, and that's kinda cool. My car may only have 240whp, but its also got like 230lbft torque at the wheels which u definitely can feel Click the image to open in full size.

Go the y7 turbo route, that's what i did and the car def. scoots right along. Mid to low 13's would be my guess

I'm piecing together a turbo kit for my Y7. I'm going to use a Y8 head and tranny with a t28, hondata, RC injectors and a nice oversized intercooler. I'm hoping for 20o-220hp at the wheels before rods and pistons. I'll have about $2200 in it all when it's done with dyno time.

Im interested in what it takes to do the install. What all is required to purchase. Do you have to piece it together? Im pretty mechanically inclined, but I dont know everything. I heard you can by the turbo from Greddy but they dont sell a specific kit for this install.

ACTUALLY TURBONETICS SELLS A KIT SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT MOTOR BUT ITS ABOUT $3500. I DIDNT WANT TO SPEND THAT MUCH.

build the bottom end and you can make well over 300FWHP on SOHC turbo. Single cam for sure.

What car is your y7 in? I don't see many people installing a turbo on a 97+ lx which is what I have. I recently got this civic from my mother to commute to school and I'm not impressed with the power. Does the fact that I have the automatic LX trim Civic make the installation harder? I would like to keep A/C. I'm pretty new to turbos and forced induction and I've spent the last week reading as much as I could. For the sake of cost and quality I would like to piece together my own system. I have access to welders and tube benders so I just need suppliers for parts. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, would it be possible to do the installation with out doing a mini me conversion? Minimally, I'm hoping to gain 40-50 hp.

If you don't do the complete mini-me swap, at least change your Y7 intake manifold to a Y8. Then you can just buy the turbo kit for the Y8.

read more, between this site, and homemadeturbo, you should have no probelm finding examples of inexpensive turbo d series motors, and what it takes to build one.

Im boosting the Y7 in my DX hatch. You just need a y8 intake manifold and it'll work with any other y8 turbo kit (as long as you don't mind cutting the hole where the intake goes on the y8).

how is it with your turbo, its must accelerate quick as hell with boost

I would turbo the y7 and wait until it blows up/gets worn out and then move on the next motor. A turbo y7 is quick but it's not fast.
