First things first, if any of you guys feel that more pics would be good, let me know. I left it with these few pics as to save the 56k crew.

Well guys, here's a tranny removal for the EK.

First you need to remove the tranny.

Tools you need:
32mm socket (if you plan to pull the axle nut)
10, 12, 14, 17, 19mm sockets
Impact gun and air ratchet (HIGHLY recommended)
Breaker bar
Ball joint tool (long fork looking tool)
Rubber Mallet

Here's how I did it:

1. Unhook the battery
2. Remove the intake (in my case charge piping)
3. Remove the starter hookups (there's a bolt on the larger one, pull the boot back and remove it)
4. Pull off all of the other sensors attached to the tranny (VSS, back up light switch).
5. Remove the tranny ground cable
6. Remove the clutch line bracket and slave cylinder (after you remove it don't depress the clutch pedal).
7. Remove the axles (there are quite a few ways to do this)
***REMOVING THE AXLES IS OPTIONAL*** you don't actually have to remove it from the hub at all to get the transmission out. I did to demonstrate and I was doing a brake swap as well, so I went ahead and did it to get them out of the way.

The axle nut itself after being popped loose. Notice the knocker loose on the lugs.Good stuff.

Axle removal:
How I did it: As I was doing some ITR brakes at the same time, I went ahead and cracked the axle nut (BEFORE I EVEN TOOK THE CAR OFF OF THE GROUND).
-a lot of times these can be stuck on. Get the spindle bent back out, and then crack them off with a breaker bar. My passenger one was stuck even more than I could turn, so I put the breaker bar down, and put the jack underneath it. Jacked it up and it broke loose.

-once you have the axle nuts off or if you drop the hubs out of the way, use a screwdriver or the ball joint tool and pry the ends of the axles out of the transmission.

Hub dropped and the axles out.

8.Either pop out the "bitch pin" or just remove the shift linkage at the shifter. I chose the shifter because I don't want to mess with that pin. Make sure you drop both rods.
9.Remove the splash shield. (if you can't figure this one out, don't even attempt the rest

).
10.Place a tranny jack under the tranny ( I used a regular jack with a peice of 2x4 on it to suppor the weight better)
11.Remove the engine stiffeners and clutch cover. This varies from y5&y8 to y7. The y5&y8 are the same whereas the y7 is different. For my y7 it was 4 bolts on the stiffener. The clutch cover is an additional 2 bolts.
12. Start removing the mounts.
-I took off the one twoards the passenger side of the car first. There are 3 bolts that hold the mount to the tranny, and then another two that hold the mount to the car. I took the mount completely off just to add extra space for me.
-Then rear tranny mount loose.
13. Remove the top 3 tranny bolts that hold the tranny to the block.
-Remove the lower starter bolt (THIS ONE IS HARD TO SEE!!!) I took off the top one the first time and it fouled me up when I tried to slide the tranny out.
14. Remove the lower bolts that hold the tranny to the block. (in the Helms manual there are 5.)
15. Now the engine should be trying to slide away from the block. Slide it far enough over to clear the mainshaft and start to lower it. ***If you have a big friend who can hold the thing up and lower it down himself it helps. THANK YOU DAVID!!!***
16.Once you have the tranny on the ground, slide it out from under the car.

BTW, the "balljoint tool" is called a pickle fork and they come in many sizes and lengths

Good stuff. I saw a couple of sized ones at the store when I went to buy it. Said ball joint tool on the package so that's what I'm calling it.

why didn't you pull the spring pin out...just hit it with a 12mm bolt and that sucka slides right out

thats even better...but most people have more 12mm bolts(8mm threads) laying around than they do punches

yup. the bolts that hold the ac compressor to the bracket are perfect. so you could just take one out and replace it if you don't have one lying around.

Because I already had to drop it for a short shifter install and I didn't feel like messing with it. Dropping the linkage was easier and it allowed me to shift it outside of the car and make sure I wasn't locked out of gears.

70 - 80 lbs maybe.

U know how axles come with a little o-ring near the end of the shaft? (the side that supposed to go into the tranny) Ya i was wondering how one would get the shaft all the way in. The little o-ring seems to be stopping it from going all the way in. I just did my ISB a couple months ago, and i noticed a leak coming from the seal on the passenger side. The seal cant be bad because I bought it brand new when i was doing the ISB.

Yeah, well this was while I was installing some ITR brakes as well and didn't know what I was doing (my first go at it).

You can get the axles out by just pulling the axle nut, the bolt attaching the LCA to the hub assembly and the steering arm and then sliding the axle out. You live and you learn.

It's just called a ball joint seperator or something like that. Its a big fork with 2 prongs and a long handle. I got a 12 inch handle, but should have gotten a shorter one. You can get them at Advance Autoparts or Pep Boys or anyplace like that.

I wish. This was from months ago when I fixed my ISB and couldn't find a decent EX tranny anywhere locally.
