I always thought it froze at anything 80 or above but last night we were drinking cheap Vodka and when we took it out of the fridge it had a big chunk of ice in it. Can anyone offer some insight?

I thought proof was just a measure of amount of alchohol actually contained in something. Like 80 proof is 40% alchohol. Alchohol freezing temp is lower then that off water. So the frozen part was water, the remaining liquid was concentrated alcohol.

Not sure what the relationship between proof and freezing is but I cane share some light on the origin of "proof."
100 Proof stuff has a 100% chance of igniting on fire. As it turns out, it has to be 50% alcohol for that to happen. |

The main reason I ask this is I am getting some good 80 proof alcohol tonight in a glass bottle instead of plastic and I don't feel like having it shatter.

"at what proof does alcohol freeze?"
it depends on two things: temperature and proof (obviously) at the freezing point, most alcohol won't freeze. vodka for example (40% alcohol, 80 proof) won't freeze at -20. note that cheap alcohol will however, because it is diluted with water; so cheap beer (or vodka or tequila or whatever) will freeze sooner because there is more water in it, even if there is the same amount of alcohol - although generally this "freezing" will only mean ice crystals inside.

I've placed both my bottles of SKYY vodka and Bacardi 151 rum and left it overnight in the freezer without them freezing or shattering. They were both glass bottles so I don't think you need to worry too much if they are decent quality.

1. Alcohol has a much lower freezing point (FP) than water.
2. Proof is the measurement of the percentage of alcohol in the drink Therefore, the lower the proof, the easier your drink will freeze. This is why a beer will most certainly freeze when put in a freezer and bacardi 151 will just get cold.

pure alcohol freezes at -80 celsius, which is lower then that lowest recorded temperature on earth(-70 C)
bacardi 151 doesnt freeze of course because its 75.5 percent alcohol. -273 is absolute zero on the celsius scale. water freezes at 0 (32 F)and mercury at -39 C. so yeah that is your answer. thats why ice-filtered beer has a higher alcohol content, because impurities are filtered out.

Stop buying boot legged alcohol and you will be fine. I've put 75 proof and above in the freezer no prob. All glass bottles, too. My girl put her Alezae (spelling) in the freezer and it came out slushy right after opening it (turned to slush upon opening, 25 proof I think).
