Non synthetic =3k miles
Synthetic =6k miles between oil changes. I don't what who told you 5 and 7, but I would'nt listen to them. I change mine every 3k with my turbo Civic with the Mobil1 supersyn.
EDIT: You're welcome to run gritty old dirty oil in your motor all the time, but with as much money and time as I have invested into mine, I don't need to change it by not spending the 30 dollars to change the mile a couple thousand miles earlier.

Re: Best oil for vtec? (Hella_JDM)
I run 10w30 year round. But I also live in AZ
I use pretty much any name brand oil. My car is a stock D series so I could really care less if it lasts for 200,000 miles

Um, no.
VTEC is a camshaft profile. It will always be the same unless you change camshafts.

All Honda owner manuals recommend oil change intervals of 7500 miles under normal use, and 3000 miles under "heavy" use or in hot/dusty climates.
The most important reasons to change oil are to avoid the build up of acids and particulate matter. I use Castrol GTX conventional oil, and change it every 2500-3500 miles. It doesn't really get "dirty" within that interval, so I really see no need to spend twice as much on synthetic as long as I'm changing it that frequently. The only advantages of synthetics IMHO are their ability to flow more freely at extreme low temperatures, and their tendency to stay cleaner a little longer.
Turbocharged engines have higher requirements (particularly temperature-wise) than NA engines, and it's always a good idea to use synthetics for turbo applications because of their temperature tolerances.
BTW, has anyone here other than myself ever had an oil analysis done? That is an excellent way to see how your oil holds up under various change intervals.

Re: Best oil for vtec? (Targa250R)
This is a very good write-up I found on synthetic vs conventional oil. I change my oil every 3k and use Castrol GTX 5-30w regularly and Mobil 1 5-30w every once in a while. When I was stationed in the desert, I used to use Castrol Syntec 5-50w.

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 all year round.
i kow i dont need such an expensive brand, but i planning on going turbo and want to use the same oil all the time.
if i wasnt going boost, i would use penzoil or valvoline.
BTW the "W" stands for winter NOT weight.

last week I used a quart of lucas oil in conjunction with my good ol' castrol gtx, and what a huge difference. I know somebody in here has heard of this stuff, also put it in my tranny and its almost silent now, great product! engine revs ever so smoother now.
oh, and the W does not stand for winter dumbass. the first number is cold weight, and the second number is running temp. weight.

The W does stand for winter. According to AMSOIL, Chevron, and various other sites on the internet. Just ask the SAE - they made the spec.

(and I'm guaging it against both a different car with almost identical miles I used to own using the old mobil 1 as well as how good the redline looks after 4k much less 2-3 compared to the new mobil 1.)
</TD></TR></TABLE>
thats because of the ester basestock (group V) used in redline motor oils. esters are known for their great cleaning ability. the fact the the oil turn dark fairly quickly shows that redline was doing an effective job cleaning your motor.

even if the W did represent an oil's weight (viscosity), how would you explain how an oil thickens as the temperature increases?

Re: Best oil for vtec?
Ha hah sorry to bring up a old post but I was sure it was going to get asked very soon with all these lil kids asking about vtec this and that. I run mobil 1 5w30 or the greddy vtec oil 10w30. And W stands for winter, not weight like most think.

Re: Best oil for vtec?
Royal purple is good a lil spendy but good. Redline is also good but $11 a quart compaired to $6.75 a quart for my mobil one that sounds a lil better. Oh and this was to prove that you can find anything by searching. So new people search yo.

Re: Best oil for vtec?
holy old thread batman!
Castrol Syntec 5w30 in the gsr for me. Change oil and filter every 6000. Oil comes out clean as a whistle. I'd run it longer, but I'm more afraid of the filter failing than the oil.
Castrol GTX 5w30 or Valvoline conventional in the CRV. Changed every 3000. I figure I don't need to run synthetic on the B20 since it doesn't have MAAAAD VTAAAAK yo.

Re: Best oil for vtec?
Um....no, the "W" does not stand for winter. It means that the weight of the oil varies from the first number to the next depending on heat; polymers are what varies the weight. I haven't heard of anyone using a static-weight oil for a long time.

Re: Best oil for vtec?
See. It is winter not weight. And if you don't believe us call pep boys or your honda dealer/mechanic's shop and ask them. Not trying to be rude but, I don't want others to think we are all stupid here at honda-tech.
peace,
Wil
