non detergent motor oil for new engine break in??
Anyone here ever use non detergent motor oil for a new engine break in?Supposidely it is supposed to allow the rings to break in faster...anyone???

your supposed to use non-detergent because it allows the rings to wear better with your cyl walls since non-detergent has no aditives that kinda make the particales in your oil float in the oil.

visiOn is right, much better break in with non detergent motor oil, and using the cheap stuff is fine so you don't have to go out there and try to find some crazy brand name nt oil, detergent oil will wash away the little particles in the oil that help break in the motor. My buddy used reg. detergent motor oil with some chrome rings and it took almost 7,500 mile for the rings to seat. I used non detergent and my rings were seated in less than 1,000

Im getting head work done right now (P&P, new valves, cams...) without touching my bottom end, does this require the same kind of process?

How do you know when the rings will seat? I have 300mi into my break-in.

I've always used Castrol SAE 30 for break-in period, 1,000 miles or so. Change it the 1st 500 miles.
Then after that, I just used the stuff that comes out of the bulk,

Sure there is. Just get some from Walmart or some place like that. If it's a buck and a half a quart then that is what you want to use.

Napa 30w non-detergent for 500 miles. Changed after 20 miles, then again at 500 miles. Changed to Castrol GTX 10w30 (non-synthetic) for 500 more. Change again, beat on car accordingly.

We usually compression check every 50 miles. Once the cylinders have all reached a reasonably equal cylinder pressure, the rings have seated accordingly. Can take anywhere from 15 to 700 miles depending on how you drive the car. Best way is to put a low rpm load on the motor while changing the rpms so the revvs do not stay constant for too long. City driving around hills...etc. The non-detergent oil helps this process speed up, but it can still be done with a detergent oil.

Re: (Rocket)
ok I have a few questons on this as well....
I full plan on beating the **** out of my motor for the break in like that article says....BUUUT
its probably going to run like ****.... for a few reasons
type R bottom end instead of the b16
Brand new clutch and flywheel....
Hondata...
ok so if its not tuned and I leave the cam gears at zero...i go to set the rings and change the oil after 20 miles....
do i first let the car warm up and ensure that VTEC works or do I even need to take it that high that soon...
clutch break in says 500 miles of moderate city driving....
how do I know the base map I use isn't going to be all messed up?
Dave
