Where is the scan tool diag conn.

Where is the scan tool diag conn.
I work at a GM car dealer and someone I know has a honda Accord 1997. The check engine light came on and I thought I might be able to scan it but I couldn't even find the data link connector. I thought that in 1996 all cars sold in the US had to have OBD2 with a standard 16 pin diag connector. I have never worked on a honda, so does anyone know where the diag. conn. is or does it even have one. They don't flash codes do they.

Yea all OBD-II DLC's are a standard 16 pin connector. If it means anything to you, pins 4, 5, 7, and 16 have the same assignments (same use) for all car manufacturers. All OBD-II DLC's are 'supposed' to be located under the dash panel near the steering column. I work at a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership, and all the ports are located right under and just a hair to the right of the steering column. Sometimes they get moved around though. My Haynes manual for the 5th gen is pretty vauge and I don't know if it's talking about the same diagnostic port I'm thinking of, but it mentions that it's located "under the passenger side glovebox behind the kickpanel". You can't retrieve the OBD-II codes without a scanner obviously, but you can retrieve the 2 digit OBD-I codes using a jumper wire. There is a 2 wire service check connector attached to the DLC, separate it from the main plug, jump the 2 wires together and turn the ignition to the ON position. The CEL should flash the code.

Yeah, pull the ashtray out. You can't miss it.
How many miles on the odometer? Honda has a 14yr, 150K mile warranty extension on all '96 and '97 Honda models.

The connector behind the ashtray is the diagnosis port. From what I have heard, it is supposed to tell you more than what the CEL will. The two wire connector behind and under the glove box will only allow you to read trouble codes if the car's CEL comes on. This will tell you what's is wrong, but will not narrow it down as to what exactly is malfunctioning. Good luck!

Can anyone suggest a good place for a fairly-priced/decent quality OBDII scan tool besides ebay? Actually, can people give their experience with different brands/methods? I think a "How To" (buy/use/pick/maintain) article would be very appreciated by HT!
I think there in the $150+ range if I'm not mistaken...
