Default NSX calipers install. Myths and Rumors Answered.. *pics*

first off i would like to say this is a worth while investment if you enjoy stopping power as well as going fast.

i got these from an HT member "D Spec Dc2" to ya!

these things were a lil dusty and had some grease but nothing a bit of heavy duty degreaser couldnt take care of, got them cleaned right up like new.

the install is pretty straight forward and shouldnt take more than 2 hours.
tools that you will need are..

1) Jack to raise the car + Jackstands.
2) Socket Wrench + breaker bar
3) 17mm + 14mm + 12mm sockets
4) Visegrip
5) Brake-Fluid
6) 10mm wrench (for the bleeder valve)

this is what my stock setup was like ..regular old boring jdm ITR 5lug brakes..

now here's whats gotta be done.

1- Use the Visegrip and clamp off the brake line right before it turns into the metal plug that goes to the caliper not that much pressure if needed but use enuff.

2- there are (2) 17mm bolts that hold the caliper assembly onto the knuckle, here its recommended to turn the wheel out so you have more space to stick the breaker car in there to loosen these sometimes tough bolts.

3- before you completely take off the bolts loosen the brake line off the caliper, once its loose just finish unbolting the caliper and hold it upside down and then finish loosening the brake line, once it comes off you will have 0% spillage just master this tecnique

now the myths and rumors get answered...

91-96 calipers bolt right up to 5lug suspension as well as 97+ nsx calipers do.
except all nsx rotors are 28mm thick and itr's are 23mm so this will bring up all the issues abotu shims and spacers that im still seeing no point to, calipers float and will compress so the use of shims is really not necessary unless your pads are almost gone which i doubt anyone will go to that limit.

97+ was when nsx gained 16" wheels since pre 97 had 11.1" rotors basically just like the ITRs but 97+ are 12.1" which is just about the biggest rotors "honda" makes ...impressive.

here u can see the 97+ bracket bolted on.

luckily i had 16" wheels to clear them.

but if you can see from the pic those brackets are made for 12.1" rotors so the inner part of the rotor wasnt being used, so the pads where not getting full contact.

this is where i decided to get inventive... trying to bolt on the nsx rotors..
these are the differences .. not much but offset and size..

now after bolting up the rotors, they bolted up fine, but for the calipers to fit right there would need to be about 3/4" spacers needed to extend teh calipers forward being that the offset is really small on the nsx, i test fitted the calipers and now tried to bolt on my wheel. the end result i would need to shave the bold NSX letters about a 1mm to get 1mm clearance. which just wasnt worth the hassle of using spacers and shaving the nsx calipers just to use a 28mm rotors and 1" more size, truth is the nsx pads and itrs are the same and get the same surface area. so the braking difference would be small to none.

i then took the 23T brackets off my ITR calipers cleaned them up and painted them flat black high heat temp paint and bolted them up to the nsx calipers, which of course fitment was perfect.

now the calipers fit the way they were meant to, i can now fit 15" wheels and the brake pads are getting 100% contact.

now the install is as simple as putting everything back in the order it was removed.

this is what the finished product will look like.

anything i may have missed or any questions just post and i will answer them to the best of my knowledge.

So you used the NSX caliper's but you are using the ITR Bracket? And which rotors are being used? The 12.1 or the 11.1?

im using the ITR rotors (23mm) with the ITR brackets made for 23mm so no shims or spacers or no crap needed (their the same as the NSX 91-96 brackets just that the NSX brackets are 28T instead of 23T(ITR) and 28T brackets are also on Legend calipers, prelude vtec are 25T i believe (not sure) so if anything those brackets can be used. just as long as it isnt 97+ NSX brackets.

seems like you made it sound more complicated than it actually is.
if you use a legend gsr rotor, it bolts right on with only 1 washer for each caliper bracket bolt. i chose to go this route bacaue of the 28mm wide rotor vs the type R's 23mm and the offset remains the same. plus i dont like the idea of using too many washers so that i can keep my integra rotors.
so you ended up using the integra rotors?
