Default Fill Tranny fluid from the Top?

I remember there was a great post a while ago about filling the tranny fluid from the top through the transmission breather (or something like that).

Does anybody have that link or at least the picture of what I need to remove? It's for a 98 Civic.

you can go through the VSS hole (vehicle speed sensor)

do an archived search for post that Tom/B18C5-EH2 made on axles and stuff i believe and you shall find your treasure.

here's a really good question... can you overfill a tranny? I don't think i've ever really known the answer to that.

Yeah that's how I do it. I don't take out the VSS, too much work. Just remove the little cover off of the breather and hook a hose up to it. Then add the fluid.

the only reason why i wanted to find an alternate way of filling the tranny is that you have to practically be a contortionist to reach the fill hole and fill at the same time.. guess if i loosen the fill hole bolt and fill from the VSS hole at the top and stop when it starts overflowing out the fill hole, then its filled. Good times

READ how much fluid your tranny takes first! You can overfill the tranny and make fluid squeeze out your axle seals, dropping fluid everywhere you go...ask me how I know.....

Yep, on level ground the fluid should top out at this hole. Get a funnel with a long hose on it. I have one in my room for this reason. Like $2 at Wal-Mart

well, I was all set to do this but I called my Local Honda Parts shop and they said they don't carry the fill bolt washer!

I then proceeded to get in this huge argument with the guy as to why you needed to remove the fill bolt in order to know how much to fill the tranny with oil and he was saying how I don't know what i'm talking about and that they NEVER remove the fill bolt.

I figured that they just put in the correct amount.

Anyway, I looked in my Helms and it said for a S40 tranny, it takes 1.9 qts. Is that right? I'm assuming I have the S40 tranny (1998 US EX Coupe).

Anybody know where I can get some fill bolt washers?

yeah, thats similiar to what I use now. I bought this thing that lets you screw the bottle of oil onto it and it has a spout that goes down into the fill hole and lets you fill the tranny, and has a valve on it so you can let it pour into the tranny when you want it to.

3 quarts of Honda MTF fill it through the top and you will have NO PROBLEMS. I saw a post in the ITR forum and I think there was one here too but seems that most are going with 3 quarts over the called for 2.3 liters

3 quarts seems a little too much for my s40 tranny. I think i'll go with 2 quarts
