Default audiobahn amp in protection mode

I installed an amp in a friends 2001 civic yesterday but i couldn't get it to work. I initally made the mistake of running power into the ground terminal and ground into power and blew the fuse. it was a 30 amp fuse and we didnt' have any so we replaced it with a 20 amp from a friends car. After switching the wires back to the proper terminals we plugged the fuse back in and the amp turns on but theres a little light on the top of the amp that says prot and its lit up. Im assuming this would mean protection.

Unfortuanely we're taking all this equipment out of his old car and putting it into his new one and he doesn't have any of the instructions. He's going to use it to power 2 audiobahn 12's of which i dont know the resistance.

Does anybody have a list of problems that would send the amp into prot mode?

The protection light usually means the outputs are shorted, but in your case hooking power up backwards probably damaged the protection circuit. Try disconnecting all speakers and see if the light still comes on, if so the amp is fried.. find a tech or sell it cheap! If the light goes out when no speakers are hooked up you probably have shorted speakes wires, amp might be ok.

but the fuse on the amp popped instantly as soon as we connected power to it so would any damage still occur?

Is the ouputs being shorted the only thing that would cause the protection light to come on?

I would never use audiobahn in my car but they were in his old car when he bought it.

There are a few things that will cause the light to be on, but the only one you can do anything about is shorted speakers/speaker wires. The fact that the fuse blew only means a whole lot of current was being used. Fuses protect the amp/car from fire-- nothing more. Most circuits are easily damaged if power is reversed. most likely the fuse blew after the damage had been done.
