the VSS is sitting about 5-6 inches to the left of the starter (closest to the firewall). Its held by 2 10mm bolts.

you only need to remove the bolt that holds it into the tranny.
One bolt. Then pull it out..

Why are you filling it through the VSS???? There is a fill hole on the back....

Most DOHC (like OBD1 B16A and all Integra B-Series trannies) and SOHC VSS are identical. All you need to do is pull the ONE 10mm as mentioned earlier and then pull the enitre VSS out - gear and all. Sounds like yours came apart upon trying to remove it. No big deal, just put it back in and take the whole thing out via the one 10mm bolt. You'll know you got it because that one 10mm bolt is really weird shaped - don't lose it!

Once the bolt is removed, gently pry(straight up) with a flat-head screwdriver. Sometimes the corrosion holds it in tight. Also, when filling tranny through VSS, be sure to have the ACTUAL fill whole opened on the side of the tranny, so you'll know when optimal fluid level is achieved, in other words do not over fill.
