Default What does the PCV valve do?

The manual says that i am supposed to check and replace the PCV valve after a certain time, i did the test that they said to do, but i think mine is gone[Edit:not working], but there isn't anything noticably wrong with my car, except that i think that i get poor gas milage for a 5spd, but i would like to know what it controls

PCV - positive crankcase ventilation. It allows the blow by gas to be reintroduced into the intake manifold. If your pcv is missing go get another. It will really help your mpg and reduce sludge build up in your engine.

get another one, this could be part of a symptom of your gas mileage. it's a tune up item, so ur car should run better with a working one.

pinch the hose going to the pcv, if you hear a clicking sound it's good.

Or shake it and see if you hear a rattling.

Yup, that works... Is you car noticeably burning oil (coming out the exhaust)??? The PCV box on the back of your block is a separation tank, (a lil catch can) It separates the air and oil, to a point... The rest of the job is up to the PCV valve... If you aren't running a PCV or if it is bad, then a lot of times your car will burn oil if you corner hard, etc. (Anything that would allow oil to be sucked back into the IN manifold from the block)... Sometimes you'll also get an irrattic idle that fluctuates up and down just as with a vacuum leak... Good Luck!!

??? i had my bov hose connected to the pcv hose before.. but a friend of mines told me it isn't a good idea to have it connected to it... So i took it off and hooked the bov hose to a smaller hose and now the bov sounds weak or not loud anymore... So do u guys reconmend hooking it back up to the pcv hose or not... my friend said that oil runs in that hose and would get oil in my bov if i hook it up to that hose...

On all of our FI motors we just run it off the plenum... Normally it's the JG Victor X IN manifold... Previous to this I've never heard of anyone running it off the PCV line tho I don't see how it would be any different... I'm also not really sure how come your BOV would blow off harder when connected to it, the hose for the PCV system is bigger, therefore more vacuum is sensed when the throttle plate is closed... It might be that fact that opens up your BOV farther than with a smaller diameter hose off the plenum... I'm not positive tho, hehe Peace
