Default About to Start on My Timing Belts...Last Minute Tips?

I've got the Helmes manual...but does anybody have any advice? Maybe some common mistakes that people make, or I could make? I just don't want to mess this up because of something stupid that I'm not aware of...

What are my chances of getting the crank bolt broken loose without an impact wrench??

Thanks in advance...

crank pully bolt sucks to get off without an impact and air. good luck on that. i'm pretty sure you have only one timing belt, not belts too...

in the end, I paid the guy at the corner garage to break it loose...

most common mistake is putting the belt back on a tooth off. just put any extra slack in the belt on the water pump side(before you set the tensioner) and it should come out right. take your time and double check it.

Good thread Jweller...I thought about doing that, but I guess I'll try it first and see if it will break loose...

niedejb...I ordered 2 oil seals...not sure if they're the same as the one. I got #30 in this pic:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...13SM40_A03.gif

and #31 in this pic:

also timing belt, tensioner belt, PS belt, alt belt, water pump, and 2 springs (#18 and #12 in the first pic above)...

I don't see the retainer on the parts list on HondaAutomotiveParts.com. I'll try to figure out what you're talking about when I get there. I basically bought everything that the guy at HondaAutomotiveParts.com recommended...

Tilt...I listed the tensioner belt

So far so good. I've got the cruise control, PS pump, alternator, motor mount, dipstick, valve cover, and upper cover off. Taking a break right now...I'm in no hurry...don't wanna screw this up

Drive to you nearest dealer if you have to but DO NOT put it back together without that "recall retainer" !!!!!!

I had it and didn't put it in mine because the directions are printed so small old farts like me can't even see 'em much less read 'em and I couldn't tell that part of it went outside the timing cover so I assumed they gave me the wrong one and since my seal looked good I didn't need it. W-R-O-N-G!!!!!!! The seal popped out a few weeks later on the way to work, I came VERY close to losin' my motor. As it was I had to go through the whole process again plus my new belts were covered in oil, and my driveway and my parking spot at work and the whole underside and back end of my car and the car that was behind me when it blew. That guy still gives me dirty looks when he sees me.

Hippie,

I want to do this right and I'm in no hurry since I can drive my TA for as long as the Honda is down, so I'll pick that part up tomorrow.

Which one is it on this picture:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...13SM40_A05.gif

What's the Honda part number??

I didn't touch the car yesterday. I've got a compressor and inpact now, so I'm gonna try the crank bolt today.

Thanks guys,
Hank

Thanks man...

I can't do much about it until I can get this crank bolt though...

Sears impact wrench with 100 psi pushing it wouldn't break it loose...so I went down to Home Depot and picked up a 6 ft cheater...

"Guaranteed Forever" huh?

I was afraid of that happening...I thought that the bolt had broken loose, but soon realized it hadn't. I'll pickup a heavy duty breaker bar tomorrow and give it another shot then...

Craftsman right? Just take it in and they'll give you a new one free of charge. no big deal, but ya, fro that kind of torque you will need a nice beefy breaker with that 6ft cheater. good luck on the change!

Actually, Husky...supposed to be lifetime too though...

jweller...with anything longer than what I had with my ratchet and short socket, I won't be able to get the cheater up next to the fenderwell...it was already scraping as is. I might have to try a 3/8 breaker...I think 1/2 with my 1/2" 19 mm socket is going to be too long...

with a 6ft cheater, you're gonna break 3/8 ratchets like it's going out of style even snap-ons

maybe try slipping the cheater over a box wrench.

FWIW - you've got the exact same problem I had. barely any room to get the cheater bar in from the top. and the car isn't high enough off the ground to get any leverage from below.

Yea, you're probably right. I'm going to take a look at a 1/2 breaker and if it bends past 90* it might work...

I'm going to look around and see if anything else looks like it will work too...

Gonna try a different impact tonight also...

I have to ask again, just for the hell of it...

This bolt is NOT a reverse thread, correct? Nothing has indicated that it is...whether on here or in the Helmes manual...

I've got a new stash of tools to try tonight :D

I just had to make sure again...that's the first thing everybody has asked me...

Well, after 3 hrs tonight, still no luck. I tried 2 more impacts...nothing.

Managed to get a 1/2" breaker bar on with my 6 ft cheater (had to cut about 1/2" off the socket with my dremel!!). I thought for sure I'd get it then, but nope...bent 1 screwdriver in the flywheel...snapped the end off of another...

I'm gonna look for something stronger to stick in the flywheel. I don't really like putting that much load on the teeth though. That is where everybody else binds theirs up, correct? I don't see any other way to do it...

Next option is heavy duty air and impact...not sure where I'm gonna get those though...

This sucks ***...

I'd go ahead and get the crank holding tool (itd save your flywheel).

I wish I had one. Let me know and I'll take it off your hands when youre done.

I think I might do that...this one?

Where's the best place to get one? I already have to make a trip to the dealer to get that retainer and the antennae mast removal tool. Maybe somebody like Autozone rents them???
