Like the title says, can someone run down the major differences between these two motors?

Yup.
Y8 has thinnest D series head gasket. OBDII..different distributor Second O2 sensor, Knock sensor, all the pain in the *** crap you don't want to deal with when attempting to tune an engine. Y8 larger runners that are slightly shorter. Chamber: smaller and more angular for better burn. Cam: Slightly longer duration. 1-2 degrees.

The Z6 has the better bottom end while the Y8 has the better up top. Honda made that Z6 block stronger and the Z6 has the wonderful and tunable P28 ECU. The Y8 has the better tranny. The gears are closer on the Y8. That's all that I can think of right now. I'm sure there's a lot more, and I'm sure the gurus of H-T know them.

I agree. The tranny is better, but not that much better. I don't have the tranny because I swapped trannies. I have it because it came with the engine and car. The SRR would probably be a better choice.

As far as up top, I think the z6 doesn't fare so well in terms of quench zones and it handles combustion gases less efficently than the Y8.

Don't forget you could just get LS rods if you are worried about your Y8 having weak rods.

Of course you could, but that would be modifying it. The question was what is the difference between the z6 and y8. It sounds like stock z6 vs stock y8. We all could come up with ways that the two could be improved but that isn't the discussion.

Spade, the Y8 trans is the beter trans, and if you are going to auto-x I would reccomend the Y8 trans over the Z6 Trans anyday, teh Z6 Trans has Aluminum shifter forks, and the Y8 is steel, the Z6 has the tendoncy to bend when used hard, even break....

All i could see is both engines are terrible in producing large amounts of horsepower

The SRR final drive kit, more preferred over the Vti LSD equipped transmission or just a greater addition on to the Vti transmission?

As I'm sure Mr. Bone will state, the S40 (I think thats the 5G EX) and K4F trannies use the same ratio's, but the 6G trannys are physically stronger internally.
