Synthetic Oil vs Regular Oil
Today I was talking with my boss about her Acura and how frequent she changes her oil and everything. She changes her oil every 5,000 miles because it has synthetic oil. But she told me I should be changing it every 3,000 miles because it might have regular oil.
My mom on the other hand told me to change the oil ever 5,000 miles. She did not mention anything about synthetic or regular. The dealer who sold me my car (2014 Honda CRV 2WD LX) told me every 5,000 miles as well and did not mention the type of oil the car had.
What is the difference and which should I put in my 2014 Honda CRV 2WD LX?

Re: Synthetic Oil vs Regular Oil
If you aren't going to be changing your own oil and instead will go to an oil change place, most of those use some off brand unless you pay a lot for a name brand oil. In that case, you should change it around 3000.
If you change your own oil and use a synthetic name brand feel free to change it at 5000.

Re: Synthetic Oil vs Regular Oil
The recommended oil change level is not specified at 5,000 miles. The car has the maintenance minder. The maintenance minder "calculates" oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). If the engine runs at higher temperatures and rpm, or at low temperatures during short trips, the oil life will deplete faster than an engine running under more normal conditions. The oil life indicator varies from owner to owner. Keep in mind, the oil life is calculated based on engine operating conditions, etc.; it does not actually analyze the oil quality or the level. For example, some people drive longer trips, some shorter trips, some people in traffic a lot, some drive it hard and rev it up, etc. -- You still need to check the actual oil level with the dipstick.
Your car came with Honda's 0W-20, which is full synthetic. The recommended oil viscosity for your car is 0W-20, and the 0W-20 in pretty much all the brands is synthetic.
5,000 miles is nothing for a good synthetic. Many full synthetics can go 7,500 - 10,000 or even more.
