What in car timing units are people using?
When attend most track events I rent the timing from the track but I have been looking into a built in system that has a wireless receiver that gets mounted on a wall somewhere. Has any used something like this? I found something on amazon:
I know there is many timers out there, any help would be awesome! If there is a thread on this please direct me to it.
Amazon.com : Keedox® Bestlap Lap Timer Transmitter Infrared Ultrared Racing Track Day with 10" Interval Time V3 64 Laps : Track And Field Competitor Numbers : Sports & Outdoors

I use a Traqmate that I have had for a while....with their optional accessories makes it really nice for me to take it from car to car and the data is cool to have too.
The AIM Solo seems to be a hot item too for portable type lap timing

I've got a Traqmate system, plus a Hotlap timer.
For the Hotlap timer systems, the standard transmitter that you place on the pit/track wall are powered by say 4 C cell batteries, so you need to make sure that the batteries are fully charged before doing a track weekend. When I got my Hotlap transmitter, I got one with a 12V lead so I could use a medium sized motorcycle battery, and not have to worry about the batteries in it. The Hotlap receiver didn't work very well when I had it inside the rear window, so I had some plates welded on the cage so it wouldn't need to detect thru a window.
The unit you showed from Amazon is really a great price. One thing is, that it mentions a 15m max range, so hopefully it will work reliably. It looks like the tranmitter uses some small batteries - (AA, C, or D cell ??) and mentions a 2 hour battery life for the beacon (transmitter), so you will need to make sure that they are well charged. For that price, you can't go wrong though, and if you have an issue and keep the packaging, then Amazon should be able to rechange or refund for it. You might also want to search and see if anyone else has any reviews on how well the unit works, but $45 for the whole unit including the tranmitter sounds good. - Jim

yeah AIM is the way and of course mylaps amb transponders but they don't time track days.
I think everyone who does the trackday thing should atleast have a AIM, how else will you know...?

I just downloaded harry's lap timer .....seems to have great reviews and was recommended to me by several people at the last track day as an inexpensive timing device that has a boat load of other features like gopro integration, so the track and your position as well as speed, g-forces, times, etc are all displayed on the video. sounds neat. only cost $20 from the app store and available on both android and apple. maybe not as accurate as you guys want but hey for $20 it gives me a rough idea on improvments during non-timed hpde's
edit: also has hundreds of preloaded tracks, I know the two I care about are there (gingerman and gratten) but it has tracks from around the world listed which is pretty neat

Re: What in car timing units are people using?
I have an AIM solo too. I like it, but on cloudy days, it sometimes becomes a little optimistic when I can compare it to the transponder on a time attack day (by a few hundredths). I know it's not much, but when you are aiming for a specific time and you think you actually got it, it can be a little disappointing when you get your official times.
It's a very good learning tool, by the way. I use the analysis software on my computer a lot. Just looking at the GPS speeds can tell me where I have been quicker on corner entry/exit and I can better evaluate what is faster for a full lap. Even at tracks that I know well, I have had some findings that I would never have figured out without it.
For Harry's lap timer, I have never used it myself, but I have heard of numerous phones shutting down mid-session due to heat. Just something to think about. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have gear that is designed for the track in the track car.

I run the Qstarz q6000. Gps based without the need for a beacon. Like it, especially the red and green colouring regarding the lap time indication on the fly.

You might also check with Jeremy @ FastTech for feedback on the pro's and con's to the different options out there. He's an active NASA/SCCA racer and has always been great to work with in my experience.

Harrys Lap Timer for iphone:
that's without an ODBii dongle.
With an ODBii dongle.
It depends on the track on how accurate it is.
Some tracks, it's spot on with AMB.
Some tracks, it's a few tenths faster, others, a few tenths slower. The biggest variance I've seen was 0.3 faster though. Usually 0.1 difference.
Harrys also records video from your phone, which doesn't look as good. Above videos were goPro vids I synced with Harrys.
Harrys can do PIP, so you can record from your GoPro, and have your phone film a second view (ie. dash)

Does it need a good signal to work? My phone doesn't work for **** when I'm at the track we visit the most frequently.

i'm cheap and use racechrono for free on my android. it is usually pretty close to the mylaps results from the AMB transponder that NASA requires.

AIM solo is probably the best for the price right now. I'm not saying it just because I'm a dealer. Second close is rumble strip. Their predictive lap timer is the most accurate in my experience. I think predictive lap timer is the most important tool in developing fast lap time due to instant feedback.

I believe for harrys you can purchase an external more powerful gps antenna vs just using what the phone is capable of. I have friends who use the add on I just use my normal phone.
