Default d series ticking under load

Another notorious 'my engine is ticking' thread.

Ive searched.

To my knowledge, its either the valves, or an exhaust leak. I cant say when the last time the valves were adjusted. What i do know that i always scrape my STOCK headers going over speed bumps. I dont often smash them, just scrapping for the most part. Having said that, here is my problem:

When i start the car, no noticeable ticking.

When the car is warmed up, no noticeable ticking.

When i rev my car in neutral, no noticeable ticking.

When i accelerate under load, lots of ticking - doesnt matter what gear im in, though it doesn't seem as noticeable as my rpms rise over 4k.

When I'm in gear coasting - NOT accelerating, no noticeable ticking.

Any help? What do you think? Valves? Exhaust leak? Something totally different?

Do a valve lash adjustment.

I never understand these questions. How about do a valve adjustment instead of wondering when the last time it was it had a valve adjustment? Have you done any kind of diagnostic or troubleshooting OTHER than just listening to it tick?

Thanks for the reply NotARacist.

grumblemarc, I never understand why people feel the need to pop into threads with anything but a constructive post. It was a question. Maybe someone has delt with the same issue and could tell me 'oh if you dont hear ticking ALL the time.....deffff not your valves.'

The bottom line is if i could save a few bucks and/or avoid spending 2-3 hours of my saturday doing a valve adjustment that would be great. k thanks.

So. You're looking for an easy fix? So now that people have suggested that you actually do a valve adjustment, and, perish the thought, burn up 2-3 hours (to do a valve adjustment?) now what? Do the maintenance that you know you NEED to be doing BEFORE you come into a thread and ask "what should I do?" Those are the types of questions I just do not understand.

Fix the **** you know needs fixing BEFORE you start asking what it is you need to fix.

What I'm looking for insight from someone who has had a similar problem. I don't spend every waking minute of my life working on cars. Dont take that as an insult, im just not a mechanic first by trade. I'm looking for someone with experience dealing with the same issue.

What kind of experience does it take to fix a problem you know you have? Or do maintenance that you know you need to do?

Can you answer this question then? Exactly where is the ticking noise coming from?

Just do the damn adjustment like you should have done before you even bothered to post and stop being so damn lazy.

It's also likely that you have an exhaust leak that opens up during a load. Or a valve adjustment is needed.
