Default installing a new distributor

How would I go about installing a distributor if the previous one was not marked for reference?
Would I have to set #1 cylinder to TDC and then move the rotor to point to #1 in the cap?

Rotor shaft is keyed and can only go on one way. Take note of which way rotor is pointing to confirm installation is correct.
IIRC after '95 the distributor cannot be adjusted for timing, thus, unbolt and bolt back on.
If you can adjust it, then use a casting mark or structure that both distributors have and mark its relation to the block. Match the new distributor with the old mark and timing will be set.

Oh I see, I can tell it's not adjustable so basically it's impossible to install it wrong huh...

It's just that I'm helping a neighbor who had a motor installed and the guy who installed it took a long time to figure out why it wouldn't start. Finally got it to start and it has been running like crap (sputtering, stalling out at idle and in gear) and it has been getting worse. Start running sort of rough and now it runs horrible.
Had CEL with 10 dtcs... if I remember.. map dtc, 1 2 3 4 misfire, random multiple cylinder misfire, and 2 codes for o2 sensor. So I checked a live feed on a scanner and it looked good except for the short term fuel trim which was jumping from 18 to 29 which is bad cause it shows on the plugs.
so I checked the map sensor and it was good- responds to vacuum, o2 sensor is working, plugs are firing (not sure if correctly). also checked fuel injector resistance and its all between 12.3 and 12.8. Fuel pressure is good, tps is at .5v, idle air control valve is clean and so is throttle body/plenum.
compression is excellent at 210 across all cylinders
crazy part is that when I went to check the codes again...they were gone?? started it up and just came up with misfire codes on 2 and 4.
owner said the guy who put the engine in gutted the cat because it got clogged up and they also put a new distributor with no change.
I can tell its not firing right because 2 3 4 plugs seem wet/black while 1 is just black. obviously its just dumping fuel so the issue is that either the computer doesnt know how much is air is going in or spark is off right? but map sensor is good so gotta be spark no?
sorry for bad grammar im at work doing this fast.
could it be the ecu?
