B18 Dyno Results with RM cams and Skunk2 Ultra IM
First off i want to congratulate the owner for allowing me to be a part of this build. Thank him for taking the input and any suggestions that I gave him and hence getting the results that exceeded his expectations. It is a really simple setup that I had the opportunity to build for him and very budgeted as well. I street tuned it this past fall before it snowed and he finally dynod his car yesterday night and the results came out decent. The goal was to get close to 200 whp as the build was budgeted and the limitation of the stock head. This is what the setup consists of:
Induction:
3" intake
Skunk2 Ultra Street IM - Stock casting no runner cleanup or anything was done to the IM. I wanted to see the results of this IM in shelf form without any clean up or sort.
HEAD:
Stock P72 head - Ports were untouched
Our Valve Job - No blending into the throat etc, just a fresh VJ on a stock head.
Rocket Motorsports M22xx Cams
Rocket Motorsports SL Valvesprings
K-Series Retainers
Stock Valves
BLOCK:
81.50mm
YCP CTR Replica Pistons
Stock GSR Rods w/ARP Bolts
ACL bearings
OEM GSR Crank
FUEL:
ID725cc Injectors
E85 (Winter blend)

Great job as always Tou the customer would be very happy that he listened and worked with your combination of input/building and tuning.

Major props on this one Tou!! I especially like this build because it defies a few common things.
You can't make XXX amount of power on stock ports.
CTR pistons don't work.
Rocket cams are old, out dated and are not capable of making good power.
Keep up the good work!

Rocket has been working away and never given up with his cams or products and continues to develop and improve on the solid base that was already there.

Thanks for the compliments guys!
thanks Mikey. I still remember your CTR piston builds and for the reasons you listed, I had to see it for myself to see how the CTR pistons in a GSR stroke setup would do.

good torque graph.
what gear settings were required? any info on the Valve to piston clearance?

pretty cool #'s. about those CTR pistons i have some thing similar to share.
the H1 car i bought in 2006 had a built GSR 1.8 with ITR head/IM. it had CTR pistons. old owner ran race gas with it and when i put put it on the dyno it only made like 185 whp and 13x ft-lbs on DNR dynojet SAE corrected. i forgot what the static CR calculated out to be but it was rather high. it was also on Toda B valve train. after i swapped it out for one of my prototype valve train (cams, springs, retainers), changed the header, and exhaust to 3" i got it up to 215 whp and 145 ft-lbs ish if i recall and i was able to get it to run fine on 91 octane. yes i'm a cheap skate. the motor blew up (threw a rod) at Willow Springs (big track) not because of tuning but because of oil starvation (giant *** 3+ quart capacity Accusump fail to save it)... too bad.

good work Tou, and thanks again for sharing.
Yea I definitely agree with you Mikey. We actually had a very similar setup before. I wonder if it could've came close to this on E85.
the setup was :
stock 1992 B16A head
RM M22X with Gen2 valvetrain - flat faced valves
Blox Intake manifold - 68mm TB - Hytech big tube - 2.5" crush bent exhaust to a chambered Magnaflow muffler
81.25mm bore x 87.2mm stroke - CTR pistons
tuned on 91oct - it made 202whp and 137tq.

The advanced valve job on this motor is one of the key ingredients here
If it had a stock-style VJ and Supertech valves, it might make more torque but the hp would have probably dropped off sooner
