Difference between B16 Engines?
#2
if I understood right.
b16a is a obd0 first Gen vtec engine
while b16b has same components as b16a just longer rods and taller block which would make higher compression. and b16b is a jdm spec engine that is obd2 I think?
I'm unsure. but thy both share the same crank and pistons

Re: Difference between B16 Engines?
the b16's are not all the same. the ones that came in the us cars have 10 less horsepower because of the cr difference. the b16b is the ctr motor. this is a completely different beast. rods are longer than the b16 a's , the head is ported from the factory, dual valve springs, different cut on the valves, better cam, higher cr. and 25 more hp than the usdm b16. now if you are going to buy one of the two and slap on the typical parts, i.h.e., so on so on. I would but a full ctr swap. but if you plan on any internal modification buy the b16 a. because aftermarket rods for the ctr are about 800 bucks. just saying. but if you are in it for the type r hype I would buy the itr motor.

If you want the best motor honda ever made, buy the B16B.
If you want a great motor, and dont want to pay more than the entire car is worth.... Get a B16A.

Re: Difference between B16 Engines?
b16's are pointless unless you boost them, they have the shortest block and shortest rods, but they rev to the moon!!
A b16b is a JDM civic Type R and uses the same block as a B18 Type R, being a taller block, it them uses ALOT higher compression pistons (pointed like) and this engine has a little more power, but revs even higher.

b16a ef 88-91(with dohc words bigger than vtec words is first Gen b16a)
b16a eg 92-95(with dohc smaller than vtec words . vtec being bigger words second Gen b16a)
b16a2 is the em1 civic engine
and b16b is the mighty civic type r engine which is best in my thought but its a bigger engine than most b16 due to block size

Re: Difference between B16 Engines?
Almost ideal rod/stroke ratio
Internally balanced for higher rpm and to a better tolerance (than b16a)
Ported and polished head (same as ITR)
Lighter valves (same as ITR)
8400rpm stock redline, will handle 9k all day long no problem
115hp/liter (more than ITR)
Also has one of the best transmissions honda made. Close ratio 5 speed with LSD
In my opinion, it's the best engine they have ever made (for production vehicles).

Re: Difference between B16 Engines?
the b16a handles 10k with no problem, and the transmission thing that is a matter of opinion. the greatest thing about the ctr is the head. the money you spend on a ctr swap you can spend on the b16a and out preform the ctr all day long

Stock for stock, the B16B is the best honda motor. Not most powerful, not best to mod, not cheapest, none of that. It is a high revving small displacement engine with a high specific output.

Re: Difference between B16 Engines?
B16B's are nice engines, but price vs power, You might as well buy at Type R swap.
If you like to rev to the moon and beat the **** outa a stock motor, get a B16B
If you want more power and don't care to rev quite as high, buy a Type R

The tranny isn't really a matter of opinion, the 4.4fd, dual synchromesh 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears, and a helical LSD from the factory makes it a dream tranny, although I won't lie it kind of sucks on the freeway at 80mph.

Re: Difference between B16 Engines?
BTW, I owned both motors at the same time, I preferred the b16b over the c5.
