Post 2009 accord k24 i4, dealer said timing skipped a tooth

So I got the code "p0341" on my 09 accord and Honda says that it most likely isn't the cam position sensors and that it is most likely the timing chain is loose. They want $900 to fix so I refuse to go though them. A chain is $114 so I will be doing just the chain if all the guides look ok.

I'm looking for pictures or even just a written guide for how to go abouts changing the chain AND setting the proper timing.

Buy a fsm from the dealer or search around for a PDF version.

factory service manual. basically, the manual the dealership uses.

i hope you're ready to drop the engine or be prepared for busted knuckles and a whole new vocabulary of curse words.

check your timing chain tensioner (TCT) to see if its failing.
The oem "R40" thats found on the 09+ TSX K24's may not be super reliable as one of my buddies has found out after a day of driving on one. He's using a R40 TCT on a K20/24 engine setup and it failed on him while on teh dyno..

interesting. there's lots of talk about it being better than the prb tensioner but no real evidence.

yeah i was on that tip too....well mostly being that its cheaper in cost vs. a PRB tensioner.

lemme get my buddy (98luder) to chime in with his R40 tct issue he encountered...

i'm not sure if it's the actual tensioner that actually failed because of faulty construction. The cam I was using created some slack in the chain, so it could have been wearing on the tensioner. I preloaded by 1 click because I didn't want to over preload and cause premature stretch on the chain. After preloading 1 click on the tensioner there was still a little bit of slack so I thought it was okay. After running the engine for just 40-60miles my chain tensioner was completely worn. I put in a new chain tensioner again R40 with 2 clicks preload and i'm testing it. If again it wears down i'm going to try a hybrid racing tensioner.

I'll grab some pictures and video for you when I get a chance.

oh btw the R40 tensioner has a 'big butt' and doesnt fit well for pre-09 K-series engines and timing chain covers, as 98luder has encountered. Shed some light on this James, ya ?

Thanks for all te posts guys. I did end up changing the timing chain this past weekend. It was a huge pain, I will def drop the motor next time. I would post a couple pics but I can't seem how too. The chain was out I'd say around 10mm.

I have 2003 accord with a K24A4. I bought a new tensioner and had someone else put it on. However, now when I try and set the timing everything lines up but as soon as I try to turn the motor over by hand the tensioner clicks and the chain pops up and the intake gear moves out of timing again. Did your tensioner click once per full revolution?

I ask because I'm thinking the guy didn't put it in. I took the chain to the dealer today and it was longer then a brand new one by about 1/4" inch. I'm not sure if the tensioner is causing the popping up of the chain or the stretch is. I'm plan on replacing the chain, I just don't want to buy another tensioner if thats not either.

I did not pre load the tensor at all. Just pulled out the dentist tool i used to hold it in and carried on. New chain has about 6000kms on it now with no problems.

After setting everything, did you turn the motor over by hand or did you just put it all back together and start it?

Thanks for responding. I replaced the chain and all is good. It still doesn't start but I knew the valves would be bent so on to the head!
