I just realized I am running a 170f thermostat and Hynness Manual states a 195F should be used. I am getting bad fuel economy about 24MPG on my civic driving pretty on the economy side.

Could this trick the ECU to run richer? BTW I also have my knock sensor broken. I have to replace it but I dont want to remove the intake. I will try to do so by removing the alternator.

Here's a thought. Get a higher temp thermostat and swap it out. They aren't that expensive. Conduct your own experiment.

what engine requires the need to remove the intake manifold and or alternator. I always just access them from the bottom side of the car quite easily... what engine is in the car?

Yes the knock sensor can cause it to run rich. It is trying to compensate. If you go from the bottom, replacing the knock sensor isn't too bad. A mirror is your friend.

bad knock sensor can cause false readings and retard timing ... the car stays in open loop when the car is not fully warm .. get an oem thermo and knock sensor im sure u will see better gas mileage

This is on a D16Y8. I really find it difficult to get to it easily. I did put two side wheels on top of the sidewalk in order to go under it safely but I do have a pipe there that makes thing worst. I think removing the alternator will make it easier.

Agreed- pull alternator. Now there's much more room to work easily.
