has anyone used leds for headlights
been looking at new headlights and bulbs. i was wondering if anyone used led lights for headlights. i see that thay use them for daytime running lights and most of them come from china...i do know the differance between the 5050 smd leds and 3528 smd leds and the temp. is between 5500k and 6500k. so any info on this would be helpful and thanks for your help

Not that this matters to most people but they are illegal, Even Audi cant use them in the R8. There is an old law stating that all headlights need to have a high and low beam.
On top of that LED's have only recently gotten to the point where they are good enough to use for headlights, so they will either be very expensive or absolute garbage.
You'll notice the sellers stating "these lights are for show purposes only, not for road use".

Retro fitting won't work.
Similar to replacing a stock light bulb with HID doesn't work.
The reflector and lens need to be designed for the bulb in order to work correctly.
Here is a LED headlamp that is DOT legal

just got the info on how many lumens that the led lights put out, it is about 500/600 lumens. also has 120 led's, type 3528 smd, 5500k / 6500k.
still have to test to see if it will work.
thay may take up to a month to get here, thay are coming from hong kong.

500 or 600 lumens is crap halogens put out something over 1000 lumens and HIDs (if in the correct housings) put out over 2,000 lumens so really leds are a waste of your time and money, however you could probably retrofit them into nice looking DRLs or fog lights

the only thing I can think of which is even close, are the new LED aircraft landing light bulbs, but they are round lamps like the 5 1/4 sealed beams, in the old days when cars had four round headlights, it was common to put incandescent landing light bulbs in, if you had an old car with four round lamps, and a lot of money to burn, sure they would drop in, but you need several grand for the lamps,if I remember right the old sealed beam landing lamps are based off of car headlamp size

Re: has anyone used leds for headlights
ok back to my converion of my old projector lights (h1 bulb set). well after looking them over and taking it all a part...to cut the holes bigger to fit 9005 type bulbs wood take a lot of work and to make the holders for the lights..so i ordered a set of led h1 bulbs to see if (1) thay will fit in without any cutting and be done with it. or (2) have to cut a little to make them fit...i also desided to cut the units up and make a pair of home made fog lights out of them...now im waitting for the lights (bulbs) to show up...after that i will see were i can mount them on the car...by the way the low beem side has a heavy glass len (domed) that can be flipped a round to make it flat if needed, also depending on how you like to see them, you got (2) ways you can mount them all most flat (sticks out about half inch) or sticking out about 2.25 inchs...make sure which one you want the cuts are difforrent.

Re: has anyone used leds for headlights
zrickety...hid arnt wouth the money,.. oem's are to low on the light sperktrum (3000k-4500k) thats in the yellow zone....what im running right now are great thay are in the pure white zone (6500k-7500k)...i just wanted to see what if any (led lights) where out thair and thay are but i've been fineing out that thay are just a littel to big to fit in the holes so you have to make some adjustments to the houseing (cutting or grinding). the base are fine and work like thay should its the bulb part that doesnt fit of the led's...and everyone around here knows when im buored i start to think of sruff to make and try which this is one of them... and thanks.
