Default H22-H23 build

Im about to build me H22 N/A and just bought some H22 Mahle stock size pistons and Forged Eagle H22 Rods. People say that I would be better with a H23 Vtec, sure it would be better but, thats means i'd have to resell my pistons&rods to buy some H23 or since both blocks are 87Bore, I only have to change Rods for the crank?

Pistons are interchangeable. My advice, stick with what you have. A lot less work, money and the difference in power won't be worth it.

Okay! But i'm asking because i'm about to go buy a H22A block since they are closed deck. Is it more worthy to buy a H23A Vtec block instead? Or still stick with th idea of getting a H22A and don't f*** with myself with OEM H23 rods with Mahle Pistons?

You already bought forged h22 rods....

Like I said, stick with what you have.

H22 rods will work in a H23 block, but they are shorter which will lower compression, if you want to keep the same ratio you will have to compensate somewhere else, but this setup is perfect for boost. Not really sure how dramatic the change will be though. The H23s under square cylinder design will increase torque, and bring your torque curve to lower RPMs which is more important and fun than top end HP.

Negative Ghostrider...... The H22 rods are longer than H23A1 or H23A rods, so if used along with an H23 crank, would give high compression, and smack the head right quick, unless using a huge headgasket.

As Spoolin said, stick with what you have, finding the right size rods to make your pistons work with an H23 setup would cost way more than it is worth.

you will make more power with the 23 bottom end but it requires more work and more attention to detail. not to say the h22 doesnt take a lot of work, it does, but building a hybrid motor takes a good bit more work.

Im not a fan of the mahles mostly because finding a machinist who knows what they are doing as far as FRM goes is hard to come by. but good luck with your project

Well said 98vtec, since you are one of our most knowledgeable guys on the Mahle pistons.

Just another reminder to everyone, the H block really doesn't change that much. You have the 92-96/7 with 50 mm mains and a closed deck. The 97+ with 55mm mains and open deck. And the 97+ SH or type-S block with 55mm Mains, open deck, and ATTS mounts, along with relocated oil cooler.

So true, the evil stepchild. If only we had the opposite as well, a 55mm main with a closed deck! That block would be in super high demand.
