Starting my 5spd conversion on my 1994 Honda Accord EX Coupe this weekend and I thought I would do a little build/progress log for your entertainment.

My car has 212k on it and the auto tranny has definitely seen its better days, I was able to find a 5spd out of a 1995 Accord LX non-VTEC with 150k on it for $300.00 along with all the accessories (starter, axle, intermediate, etc) for an additional $86.00. I have been planning this conversion for awhile now so I already installed the clutch pedal bracket, master, etc.

Parts List:

Clutch pedal bracket (just bought the brake pedal arm)
Shifter assembly w. cables and a cheap walmart ****
B&R fittings 4' clutch hose (Bonaco inc. basically blew me off for some reason..)
1995 LX Transmission with 150k
Clutch side motor mount
TAS Auto slave cylinder
Exedy Stage 1 Organic clutch kit
Stock Honda Flywheel
Stock Honda Starter
Intermediate shaft
Drivers/passenger axles (You only need the drivers side axle)
5spd ECU (P0A, for F22B1)

Anything else I might have missed I'll add later.

Shift cables, I repainted the shifter assembly to match the paint on the car (had some leftover from painting my bumper) to get rid of the rust coating on it.


Nice Exedy clutch, came with a ton of stickers which was rad.


Transmission when it finally got in the Garage, just caked in road scum and then baked on..


After a nice pressure wash along with heavy degreaser.


Started removing mount studs and the shift cable bracket, along with installing the new throwout bearing, cleaning up the fork etc. (This was before the new slave) looks really clean now.

Where did you get all of your parts from? I'm doing the swap myself in my 97 EX and also about how much did you spend?

I spent $300 for the Tranny from the local junkyard. Then I decided to go with an aftermarket clutch due to the Honda ones not being reliable, another $300. Then with all the supporting parts I probably spent another $100, like the starter, shifter, pedal bracket, etc..

Well I'm impatient, decided to wire up the clutch safety switch and route the reverse light wire into the bay. I also drilled out the chassis side transmission mount. There is a small dimple where I used a punch to mark out and then I slowly, and I mean slowly stepped up in drill bits to make it as clean as possible.

Reverse light In the last picture you can see three black and one red wire. The red/black is the safety switch, and the black/black is the reverse sensor. I used 16 gauge on the reverse wire just to ensure its strength under bay-type conditions. (Polarity doesn't matter so neither does the color)

Just the junkyard, pulled the pedal bracket/brake pedal arm off about a month ago. Then I got the starter with the Tranny last week.

Well the Holidays are finally over so I have a chance to update this. The clutch is installed, Tranny is in, shift cables are routed. Etc... I'll get more in depth with the pictures.

The installed shifter. After removing the cover and bolt from the auto shifter I pulled it out and cleaned the grease tray and the surrounding area with simple green. Mostly due to the large abundance of human slime in that general area. I don't have a Honda boot or **** so there is a giant gaping hole and a cheap **** in place of the decent looking stuff.



So finally moving on to the whole point of the thread; the transmission. It took me about (minus the time of removing the entire front left/right suspension due to a lower ball joint that wouldn't come loose) 45 minutes to unbolt everything and get it supported/unplugged and ready to be dropped. I also decided to remove the tranny cooling lines at the radiator to eliminate clutter.

Here's a comparison, the auto is about 3x larger and heavier.

So I decided to go with the HT marketplace B&R fittings hydraulic clutch hose kit rather than having bonaco built me one. Bonaco.inc basically blew me off and I guess its just their fault for loosing my business. B&R actually called me a day after I ordered the hose just to double check everything and they even added another foot on just in case! Would definitely order from them again.

Then considering my brakes were a little soft and needed a definite rebuild. Repainted (although it looks tacky, red is better than rust) and then lubricated.

And then this happened when I went to bleed....


So now....


I finally routed cables and somehow miraculously got them in the bracket on the tranny. I had to remove the top half of the intake manifold to get enough space to route them, although a missing C-clip is the only thing keeping me from driving this right now... So tomorrow I'll hit the yard and get one.

Need to find someone in my location interested in a 5 speed swap. I need to go the other way and convert to an auto. I love my car but my teenage daughter needs an auto.

You could probably sell the manual and turn around and buy a automatic.

I'm pretty confident that I could but it would be ideal to work with someone doing the manual swap so I could take EVERYTHING I need and he/she could do the same. Nothing is more frustrating than doing a swap without a donor vehicle. It's all those trips to the bone yard for things you forgot or didn't consider.

this is a good thread, i was reading others cuz i was looking into doing a manual swap and i saw that you supposedly had to cut the stock auto tranny bracket out and weld a new one in but i guess you can just drill bellow it

You have drill above it, the upper dimple.


There is absolutely no way you could convert a manual to an auto. It wouldn't be worth the time or money. Just sell it and buy a new one that's an auto. Or let teach your daughter to drive a stick. Its not that hard.

I personally don't like the red accents everywhere, but you did an awesome job with the swap. What else do you have done to it?

Did you do the rear main seal? I thought it looked a little grody.

I've removed all of the Vacuum lines and hard lines, so now there is only the red rocker cover, intake, and the injector resistor box. Thanks!

I didn't I was on a schedule to get it back together (My daily) so I didn't replace any of the seals. Although I will be taking the engine out to clean/shave/repaint the bay. Then I want to do a balancer shaft delete, and a head gasket job, replace all the gaskets, etc...

I pulled a loom off of a stock AUTO shifter and just de-pinned the wires I didn't need. Then you only need to run a total of two wires to both the clutch and reverse light. It was the easy part! IMO the worst part was the shift cables..
