97 civic with a b18c sputtering/hesitation in vtec
So need help guys I got a 97 civic hatch with a b18c, has a intank fuel pump don't know what type, but also has built top end cams springs ect... Car also has a vafc. So when accelerating in first all good till I hit vtec and right when it hits vtec car jerks like sputters for a sec. then keeps accelerating then I shift to second gear then car jerks back and forth and rpms go up and down while motor accelerates for 2 to 3 seconds. Then in third gear car has major hessatation in vtec. Idk wtf but I checked the timing the plugs changed the injectors to 270cc, the spark plug wires are new. I have a aem wideband and at idle car runs at 12.5 12.6 so I know it's rich and under acceleration runs at 11.0 11.5 so that's pretty rich but plugs are ok not fully black. No CEL but when I ground the plug to set timing the CEL reads 21 vtec solenoid but idk why it's not on when the car is running normal but any info would be nice thanks!

I had this exact problem with my itr swap turned out my solid mounts vibrated one of my grounds loose and I cooked a p73 ecu somehow. Cranked the ground down and changed ecu and no more problems

checked all grounds all good
heres a video i took its at idle runs rich and when reving the car right when it hits vtec it sounds like a 2step bbut the more throttle you give it clears up idk and look at how rich it runs when it sputters. at wide open throttle it runs that rich on the wide band and and feels like the car is defiantly holding back power in vtec.

Ok well first you should figure out what was done to the bottom end. I know the car and I know it has mods to the block. It could even have a b16 crank in it. the guy who built that motor is famous for dumb stuff like that. He goes too low of compression every time. There's an ls vtec with the same problem as your car an now the guy wants to sell the motor. Good luck an you should have just boosted the b16. Could have done it for around 1500

I think he works at Maui Toyota not sure of his name I can try an find out. You should call an ask the guy you got it from what EXACTLY was done to the block. Trust me it will help you trouble shoot the problem. I will keep trying to help you figure it out as best as I can.

I'll keep an eye out for a stock Gsr block. It sucks having no dyno here if you could get that car tuned I bet it would be pretty fast. I'll call a freind tomorrow and see if I can get the guys name that built the motor. That's funny the guy didn't even know what was done to the block, bet he spent allot of money on that car.

Ok so talked to my friend today he said car NEEDS to be tuned. Try adjusting the vtec high see if it enguages. Car has low comp pistons don't know what kind he didn't specify.

What's the guys name?? Who did you talk to?? Ya I'll be getting hondata soon. The vtec def works I can hear it and on the controller it says it's on it's just that it's very weak in the rpms. Oh and is this joe by the way?? Lol.
