Crazy Oil Consumption - B16a2
This issue has been covered to death, but I wasnt able to find a similar circumstance to mine, hence why I created a new thread. I have a 1999 Civic SiR (SI in the States) that is completely stock. Zero mods. Car has NO alterations. As of the last 6 or so weeks, the car has been chugging oil. Here's all the info, unbiased, as I can think of. I need help in figuring out what is going on.
1. Car was purchased at 132,000km from a middle aged woman who had no idea what VTEC even was and claimed she never revved the engine past 5000rpm.
2. Car initially did not use any oil. Then a little bit. then a little bit more. Now it's gulping it like a pig at 182,000km.
3. Oil is changed religiously at 5000km. Previous owner used Dino oil, but with the lowish kms on the engine, I decided to switch to synthetic the day I got it for peace of mind and I've been running it for 50,000km now. Using Amsoil 5w-30 XL.
4. My VTEC solenoid gasket and oil pan gasket were leaking. I replaced them. No more leaks anywhere that I can see.
5. Upon start up, NO smoke comes out the back. Upon driving in VTEC, NO smoke comes out the back.
6. I hit VTEC a good 5-6 times a day.
7. The tail pipe is friggin' black. There is no residue on my bumper, but the tail pipe gets super black, super fast. I had an idle issue (vacuum line came loose) which caused the engine to idle up and down between 1200-1600rpm. It would also sputter black stuff out the pipe.
8. You can sometimes smell FRESH oil behind the car when running in VTEC. Not burning oil. Fresh, just popped the oil fill cap hot and fresh smell.
9. Compression test after 4 cranks came out to be 180, 180, 180, 178.
10. Havent done a leak down test.
11. PCV valve appears to be working (makes clicking sound). Has not been replaced.
12. In 1400km of driving, Ive added 2 QUARTS of oil. Where is this stuff going???
13. Oil is being lost regardless if driving in VTEC or not. No change in rate of loss either.
14. I NEVER rev the engine past 3500rpm until at operating temperature. The odd time I may have pushed it to 4000rpm, but that would be a very RARE instance.
15. I have run the engine low on oil, to the point the oil level was on the minimum mark of the dipstick. Never below it though.
16. The engine pulls very smoothly and very strong.
17. I did run a AEM V2 intake for a little (about 35,000km) but I switched back to stock a little while ago.
I've been told that if my valve seals were going, I would see smoke upon start up or aggressive down shifting. I've never seen anything when I had friends driving my car for me and I followed behind.
I've been told if my rings were going, I would see smoke while driving. I dont see anything.
Is it possible that the Catalytic Converter is covering up that much smoke? I used to have a '92 Si that lost about 1.5Quarts per 5000km and it smoked decently. However, the Cat was removed on that car. I've heard that there is no way a cat could cover up 2 quarts of oil in such a quick period. WHAT IS GOING ON!?!?
