Re: Montana CHUMP car build #1
Whew, been banging out the work.
Randon got new bearings in the front, and pressed in the longer ARP wheel studs. Waiting on new rotors and pads. these rotors are shot, and out of spec.
Helmet kits got here for the radios.
Wheels and tires got here. Bumper covers are here.
Made a pimping little dash for the switches and the master kill switch. To make it easier to work on stuff, It can be tilted up and out. Or down and back over the shifter, or simply removed. Once it's slid into place and locked, it's hella tight and strong!

Re: Montana CHUMP car build #1
Here's the scoop. We needed a place for the switch panel and the master kill switch. CHUMP rules really curtail doing the pimpy and fun stuff. Unless it's for safety. SOooo, I made this real nice, stiff, safe switch mount for the master kill switch. I even managed to incorporate some dzus fasteners on it. ...lol... That white top will get replace with carbon fiber... or we might just paint the whole assembly flat black. haven't decided. Just wanted to have a unique switch panel.
To make it easy to get to the wires, it pivots up and locks to the cage when parallel with the windshield. Pivots back over the shifter, or can be removed entirely in under 6 seconds by one person.
Tilted up:
Or tilted back over the shifter. At this point, one pin and it's out in under 3 seconds.

100% agree.its on the list. Were seriously under the gun for time. So, for now, we have to run the column in the stock configuration. It works. But for sure its gonna get redone. :-)

Re: Montana CHUMP car build #1
Went to work on the suspension. ALL of the suspension bolt heads were sheared off, which explains the old shocks on the car. We had to actually replace all the LCA's and one front shock fork because of it. That killed about a day.
Here are some progress pics.
Had this old REX suspension, was hoping "something" would interchange.. Nope. oh well, was worth a shot.
You know how you see certain racing on TV and theres always somebody dragging a bumper cover? This was our idea to help minimize that. Those aren't rivets along the top edge, those are welds.

6 point Schroth belts, to work with the Hans device.
IN and mounted... FINALLY. What a pain that sub strap was. But better for the old "twig and berries in an emergency situation.
Drum brakes suck, but we're gonna make the best of it. I don't know what people normally do, we decided to just write on the shoe to check wear, later. Had to convert back to drum when we ruined all the control arms. It's all I had for spares. Gotta do what you gotta do in a pinch.

Engine was a FILTHY mess. YECH. We needed to pull the transmission and replace it and the clutch.. trans had some grinds and the clutch was used up.
Power washing the filth off in the driveway.
Here's where you don't want to be, 3 days before you have a race.
New transmission in, Thanks to the Speedfactory for the quick help on the transmission and parts. :thumbup"

Took the ebay 4-2-1 header, cut the end off and upp'd it to 2.25 piping from the 2". Necessary on a stock D engine? Probably not. Fun project though. Had to do a new exhaust anyway. the other one was a disaster. been welded to and parts changed out maybe 4-5 times. Was a good candidate for a "failed fabrication" thread.

Re: Montana CHUMP car build #1
Ebay coils are on, and new set of kyb Gr2 shocks. Shocks suck, but they're cheap and fill the rules, so that's how that goes.
Rear suspension is WAY to stiff with the eBay coil springs on it. Might cut down the old fronts and stick them on the back.
Anybody have a rough idea how heavy a spring ends up on a road race car, front and back? Car probably gonna weigh 2200 or so with driver. Any help appreciated.

We ordered up custom Porterfield R4-E (e for endurance) shoes on the rear for our car. We ran two 24 hours races on the pads front and rear and could go for another race or two easily.

Re: Montana CHUMP car build #1
Seems like most guys that talk about Chump stuff in an honest fashion, anywhere from $4-$6k.
But once it's done, the real value starts to shine through. This first weekend, CRAZY expensive, next weekend after that, other than fuel, tires, entry fees, is practically free. In the loosest sense of the word. ...lol...

Re: Montana CHUMP car build #1
You can build cars for super cheap depending on deals you can get up. We spent around $511 per driver (5 guys total) for the car which was EVERYTHING. Parts, registration, licences. Then we just split up the gas we paid at the track. Car we purchased for $1 even though we actually got it for free.
But we re-used some stuff we had (my Sparco PRO-ADV seat and harness and extinguisher which is $1100 right there) we used a BMW 2000 cage in our protege we got for free as well. All our wheels were either ones borrowed from my rally car at the time or spares from the car as well. But even then you very well could get a guy on your team who owns a race car and you can re-use all your fire extinguisher/seats/belts.
Cost Breakdown of our Protege:
500 Car Registration
500 Driver's Registration
250 Racing Licences
81.62 Radiator
43.41 Radiator Hoses/Clamp/Cap
205.6 Struts
290 Brake Pads F/R
15 Brake Fluid
43.07 Brake Rotors (Front)
30 Transmission Fluid
24.31 Spark Plugs/Caliper Repair Kit/Hose
334.56 Tires
167.28 Tires
63 Paint
110.79 Tubing

Yep, bringing an entire running car. Sadly, it's not a vtec engine, but it is an engine we could use in a pinch. All the control arms and main relays and all kinds of bits will interchange. I agree, much easier to bring a parts car.

Ha.
I got that to make a go-kart out of it.
Funeral home got it as a sample of a low- end "el-cheapo" casket. The guy gave it to me. I mean this thing is flimsy and cheap, has dents in it, weighs about 50 pounds is all. BUT, make a sweet go-kart.
