So my brother has been borrowing my 97 civic for a while because his truck is a piece. To say the least, he knows absolutely nothing about cars so its safe to assume that he has done nothing for up-keep. So, as he is driving down the interstate today he blows a hole in the exhause side of the block roughly the size of of a pool ball.... I plan on fixing the car and at the same time want to play around with it. I've never pulled an engine much less done a complete rebuild so i thought it would be fun to strip the old block to the core and replace it. I know enough about my car to get by on a day to day basis and do numerous types of repairs but am in no way ex expert. maybe a novice..lol. so anyway the engine is a D16Y8. Nothing fancy and i don't really plan on going to crazy with the rebuild. Probably just going to stay close stock with maybe a few internal upgrades. My question would be if there is anything in specific that i really need to pay close attention to so i don't end up losing the whole engine completely. Im mostly concerned with fuel and break lines, A/C lines, or anything that might go supernova on me when i start pulling botls. Any tips to make life easier?

good luck on the rebuild. Im just getting ready to do my first engine pull also on a y8. If anything comes up as a problem with my pull ill be sure to put it up.

better to just get a whole new motor as there is NOTHING reusable bottom end wise goes, you may be able to reuse the head but have it checked over at the machine shop...

Pulling the motor is fairly straight forward, there is a trick with the a/c that i do (and im sure other do) which is just unbolt the compressor from the block and leave it hanging while u pull the motor... that way u dont have to discharge and recharge...

I found it easier to lower the motor onto something like a tote lid (plastic and flat), get an engine hoist, lift up the car's frame, and pull the motor out from under it.
