Budget Header Showdown - Replica Headers vs. Skunk2 Alpha 1.8L Dyno Test
We were given an opportunity to test out the lastest popular budget headers for the Bseries recently. All but the Skunk2 Alpha are designs that are replicas of the real deal.
Our test subject is a sexy 91 CRX SI with a stock 98 Spec JDM ITR Swap. Big thanks to Mickey G for letting us use his car.(Green CRX)
Mods include a Hondata S300 and an intake. We baselined using the OEM 4-1 header and used our 3 inch exhaust dump for every header.
Our test subjects are
OEM 4-1
RMF narrow
Hytech Small Tube
Skunk2 Alpha
Toda Replica
SMSP replica
To make the exhaust install and make everything easier we went ahead and hooked our 3 inch dump to the car. Each header is tuned for consistency.
Here is our baseline using the OEM 4-1 98 Spec Header
181/132 Pretty much what a stock ITR puts out.
Next up was the SMSP replica. Ground clearance is sweet, the design looks smaller and constructed much different from the real deal B19
Red Line is SMSP Replica / Blue Line is JDM ITR
Next up is RMF Narrow Replica. Fits nice, ground clearance is decent.
Red Line is RMF Narrow Replica / Blue Line is JDM ITR
Next up is Hytech Replica. Fitment is good, ground clearance is rough.
Blue Line is Hytech Replica / Green Line is JDM ITR
Next up is Skunk2 Alpha. Fitment is good, Ground clearance isnt the best, construction is great for the price.
Red Line is Skunk2 Alpha / Blue Line is JDM ITR
Next up is Toda Replica. Great Fitment, Good ground clearance - Simple and works.
Red Line is Toda Rep / Blue Line is JDM ITR
Here are some comparisons.....for the sake of comparisons
Hytech Replica vs. Skunk2 Alpha(The big header pairing debate!)
Blue Line is Hytech Replica / Red Line is Skunk2 Alpha - Midrange characteristic was similar when i threw the Skunk Alpha on a big 2.0L
Toda Fakie vs. Skunk2 Alpha
Red Line is Toda Fakie / Blue Line is Skunk2 Alpha
Toda Fakie vs. SMSP Replica
Red Line is Toda Fakie / Blue Line is SMSP Replica
RMF Narrow Replica vs Toda Fakie
Red Line is Toda Fakie / Green Line is RMF Narrow Replica
Toda Fakie vs. Hytech Replica
Red Line is Toda Fakie / Blue Line is Hytech Replica
Here is a cluster of all of them overlayed
Each header was individually tuned on the same day in a 3 hour window. Results will vary once modifications are done to the engine.
Any questions or suggestions on what might work for you please feel free to PM me. Also it'd be cool if you bought your header from someone who knows whats going to work instead of some kid selling parts out of his moms basement.
If there is a header needed for a specific setup there are a handful of really good header designers around here. Randy (NAH2B), SSR, ASP, SMSP, Hytech..etc..etc. If you're spending a ton of money on a nice built engine......compliment it with a custom header.

Re: Budget Header Showdown - Replica Headers vs. Skunk2 Alpha 1.8L Dyno Test
God how this header thread has helped me!! I was really debating on the Skunk2 vs. the Toda rep but I think I'll stick with the Skunk2 in that my build is prominently already Skunk2. Here's a basic run-down, and I think the Skunk2 Alpha will really shine on my build.

Thanks babe, remember that time we slept in the same bed and our arms rubbed together? I do.

Thanks for sharing, hytech reps aren't as bad as people made it seem then. Toda fakie showed nice results.

from the graph there really isnt a big difference with none of them...just get the replica you like the most...cause unlike my 800 dollar header they all have a smooth midrange that keeps climbing...

Thanks for the time and testing Mikey! I was honestly surprised the RMF narrow (what I'm running on my 1.8) was only out performed by the toda peak numbers wise.

Re: Budget Header Showdown - Replica Headers vs. Skunk2 Alpha 1.8L Dyno Test
great thread! Makes me wonder if I should throw the RMF narrow fakie on the CRX instead of opting for a Toda rep or a Skunk2 header.
and thanks for leaving out the Bisimoto header. We didn't need Bisi coming in here telling us how he is an engineer lol
