Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si *WITH VIDEO*...
My 1994 Honda Civic SI has an erratic idle. It stays at 3000-3500rpm when started cold till it warms up a bit then goes down to 1500rpm and jumps to 2300rpm consistently. What could this problem be?? Here is the video on youtube or the issue..

I can also hear a clicking from the fuse box but not sure if thats my command start or something. Im not getting and CEL's and everything seems to be ok. As well when it drove previous it would studder at open throttle or when you just lightly press on the gas.

Sounds like it could be many things.. Im going to test my TPS with a multimeter and see what that comes up with.. Also does anyone know a quick test for the IAC Valve on a 94 Civic SI 1.6L?

I've done some research and i'm going to attempt the IACV clean today.. see if that helps.. Also going to test the TPS sensor and get those 2 out of the way... Could this be a head gasket?

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
It's definitely not a headgasket. A lot of people have the same problems, the usual suspects are:
1. IACV is dirty, just clean it out.
2. Vacuum leak somewhere.

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
So turns out i was quite low on coolant and had air in the system.. Once we fixed that the jumping idle went away and ran normal. However now i have a studder when i press the pedal. Either WOT or normal acceleration the studder is there. It feels like the car is running on 3 cyl when i press the pedal.. Is this a issue of a dirty IACV or TPS?

Here is the TPS test.. either im retarded and messed up the test or the sensor is right out of wack.. Here is the link.. and sorry its tilted.. You'll notice the starting point is 11.95. I'm on the OHM setting at 20k like i was told to be. Then it goes down to 7 something and back to 8 at WOT. watch the video and see for yourself.

Nvrmind..Got it. I was running OHMS.. Ran .49 v closed and 4.49v WOT.. Im guessing that means the TPS should be ok? Next would be the IAVC test/clean... Anyone got the procedure?

Is this something i should be looking into.. Im not familiar with this procedure...

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
Ok so the Jumping Idle came back.. Here is what i did..
-coolant was low so i topped it up and bled the system of air.(seemed to fix the issue at first but car was warm)
Once the car got cold again the jumping idle came back. So then i decided to clean to IACV and TPS. I took off the IACV and cleaned it, let it dry, put it back on.. As well i sprayed carb cleaner in the 2 holes and the bouncing idle went away as long as the spray was squirted into the hole. As soon as i stopped spraying the idle was rough till it cleared up and then started jumping again.. I stuck my hand over the throttle body to make sure of no leaks.. It sucked my hand in hard and tried to die.. NO LEAKS..
I then unhooked the TPS as the idle was jumping and it stopped, idled high at about 1800rpm then down to 800rpm once warm. Plugged the TPS back in and it was fine while it was warm.. Once it cools down it seems to jump.. Does this mean faulty TPS even though the volt test was passed? It was .45 at start and WOT was 4.9..
As well im still getting my sutter or hesitation when engine is warm at about 1000-2000rpm.. After 2000rpm it drives and runs great all the way through to redline..
WHAT ARE MY 2 PROBLEMS? AND HOW DO I FIX THEM?

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
Ok... so the previous owner lied.... Lesson kids... always check it out instead of believing a seller.. (Not saying everyone is a liar but better to be safe..)
Previous owner said in his ad that the plugs/wires/car/rotor were all changed however only the wires were. The plugs had Carbon Tracking all over them. I talked to the previous owner and he said it ran like crap then he changed the wires and it went away a bit but then he decided to sell the car.. Turns out the cap/rotor/plugs were not changed.. To further the stupidity he used Bosch plugs in the civic which says right on the timing cover the NGK plug number to be used.. Not saying there isnt a Bosch plug that may work but really?
I'll throw in the new plugs tonight and keep you updated.. Attached is an image of the plugs... Smart Like Domi!

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
Fixed the hesitation and studder... Was the Plugs..
It was my iphone that was taking the pictures.. sorry... And the plugs were bosch Platinums and i installed the NGK facroty's back.. (ZFR5J-11)..
However the idle still does the same up and down till its warm.. If i unplug the TPS sensor it idles at 2000rpm till its warm then 1000 when its warm... Is this problem my TPS or somethign different?

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
***UPDATE***
Here is the video of my issue!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEiTi5GAcrQ
I'm still having the jumping idle issue.. Thats the last of my problems.. Heres whats going on..
-When cold, Idle jumps up to 2700rpm then falls to 2000rpm consistently
-Once warm it goes down to regular idle..
-IF I UNPLUG THE TPS SENSOR IT IDLES HIGH BUT NO BOUNCING!!
-Tested the TPS to .45v Idle & 4.9v WOT.... Seems good..
-I have cleaned out the IACV and cleaned the TB (sprayed carb cleaner in the holes)..
-I have checked for leaks over the TB opening with my hand and it sucks hard and dies out.. So no leaks there..
-Sprayed Carb Cleaner around the gaskets & hoses to check for vaccuum leaks... NONE..
WHAT IS NEXT? This seems to be a well known issue but can't figure it out..
I have a BLOX TPS coming and a new IACV coming hopefully one is faulty..

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
sounds to me like a vacuum leak, I would take a propane rig and run it along all of the gaskets, if the idle smooths out then it is the gasket, I had the same proplem of my 95 civic when i still had the single in it. I would say that your TPS is fine as long as it goes from .5v to around 4.3+ V. As long as there is no erratic jumps in the voltage change or anything like that it is just fine.

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
I've fixed the stutter and hesitation issue.. It was bad wires and plugs.. The wires were causing the plugs to carbon track and not have proper spark..
Now i just have the high idle and bouncing idle issue to iron out...

Re: Erratic jumping idle on my 94 Civic Si...
hey its the iac valve u need to take it off the throthle body completely 3x10mm bolts once its off there are two more bolts on the side of it holding on a cover take them off now remove the cover now u will see a shiny mable looking ball surrounded with a plastic thing now on the plastic thing there will be two slits take a screwdriver and twist the white plastic clock wise until it stops turning now clean it with brake clean and put it all back to gether and it will ildle perfect i guarantee it
