1998 Honda Civic EX with P1457 Code
Hey everyone! First post here!
I have a 98 Civic EX with 127K on it. Runs great! I'm learning to care for my cars on my own. I've replaced belts, front brakes so far, and plan to learn much, much more.
In the last couple of weeks my car has had some trouble starting, acting like it's not getting fuel. But once started, it runs fine. Yesterday my Check Engine light came on, so I took the car to Advance Auto Parts and obtained code P1457 from the computer. Looking up the code, it seems to be related to the fuel system; evap colenoid, evap canister, computer, fuel cap or PCV?
Guess I'll try to start out cheap ... fuel cap first, but I'd love to hear your recommendations for a newb.

As long as my car is running, is there any danger to driving it with this code, until I can get it fixed? It is our daily driver.

After you do the fuel cap, reset the ecu, pull the back up fuse under the hood and see if somes back, still do the pcv valve as well.
As for driving I am sure you will be fine, but better to solve the problem.

I used my Haynes manual to try to locate my PCV valve. That manual is very general, but I believe my PCV must be underneath the engine. I haven't had the chance to crawl underneath, but it is my intention to do so soon.
I cleared the code yesterday, and I've driven the car around a bit since. So far the code has not returned.

Well, dangitall ... The code returned. A good month's run ...
I found this necro'd thread on here, which is giving me some info. I have a Haynes manual, which also helps, but the descriptions it provides are kind of cryptic. Multiple car models covered in one book, and not everything matches my car.
I'm looking for the EVAP canister so I know what hoses I should try to replace. I found what I think is the canister, but I'm not sure. Can someone verify? (See attached pic). One of the hoses runs to the cruise control module (which I think is kind of strange, but I'm a noob), and the other to the intake manifold, I believe.
Also, why do I read that the computer can be damaged if this problem isn't fixed in a timely manner? Does the computer just get tired of hearing "P1457 ... P1457", and decides "screw this crap"?

No the computer cannot be damaged from the evap code,
it simply detects a small leak within your evap system,
the reason it takes time for it to come back is cause the evap monitor runs it course and either does or doesnt detect a leak.
If you drive the car alot then the leak cant be that bad or the leak would be detected within a few days, sounds intermitent to me, probably during the evap purge process, and that would consist of probably replacing the evap purge solenoid.

It's been 7 months since I cleared the code last. I did a good wipe of the gas cap and filler opening, and am guessing that did the trick. At least I hope.
