Icon2 Poor man Type R, running extremely rich.

I have a 93 eg hatch that's running EXTREMELY rich. Random light smells from the exhaust, not to mention horrible gas mileage. About 8-11mpg if I'm lucky. Knowing whether or not I'm running rich isn't the problem, but how would I go about fixing it?

I've done a lot of research, mainly on Honda tech.

Here's some info on my eg:
Poor mans type r.
Gsr bottom end, b16 vtec head with gsr cams, rods etc.
I have two ecu codes coming up, 14 and 24. Which are the knock sensor and iacv.

I've thought about just cleaning the iacv, but is that something that could cause running rich?

Its almost as if its not getting enough fuel when driving as its a very awkward unstable drive, or maybe its getting too much? By unstable, I mean it acts as if it wants to go faster in any gear I'm in as if the rpms aren't what they should be.

I have no rpm gauge so I have yet to really tell for sure.

I'm aware of what causes running rich, but maybe someone knows the specific reasoning to why its happening to my hatch?

Check timing? Get it tuned?

I think you mean code 23 for the knock sensor. I don't think there is a code 24 for our Hondas.

Some food for thought:

-Fix the KS code
-Check the mechanical and ignition timing (as mentioned)
-How old are the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor?
-Chipped ECU?
-What is the fuel pressure? Does the FPR work properly?
-Are you using oversized fuel injectors?
-Is there an exhaust leak?
-Is the thermostat stuck open?
-Does the ECT sensor work properly?

...and more

Plugs, caps, wires Etc. are all fairly old. The car sat for about 3 months until just recently. The head has yet to be really broken into as well.

No exhaust leaks or any excessive leaks of any kind other than an oil leak.
P28 ECU, used to have a skunk 2 chipped but it needs replacing.

I have a fuel gauge tack but it's not hooked up just yet, so I can't be too sure about the real technical questions.

No smoke when i get on it or anything either. Drives somewhat well, just feels like it's not 100%

It has not been tunned at all, could this be the cause of everything?

The P28 is probably most of your problem. You need to run a chipped ecu and get it tuned. I wouldn't drive the car until you do that, and if you have to drive it definitely don't beat on it. Drive it like grandma.
