Default Civic d16 head question

Hi everybody I've been lurking this site for a awhile decided I should join and hopefully someone can help me out. I just recently purchased my 2nd civic a 97 Civic Hx to be exact. 360k miles on body with 80k on replacement d16y5 bought about 3 months from a salvage yard by previous owner got receipts and all.

To my question: I went to smog my car (dreaded ca smog) and failed.
Ignition timing was way off 6 btdc so while I was setting the timing back to stock I noticed the head stamp was P2J-6 and to the right 98 went looking into it because i just like to know stuff anyways I couldn't find exact info about that year from my googling and forum searches all I could find was P2J-6 but 97 which was a y8 head. I'm not sure if the years make a difference and if I have a y8 head or y5.

Anyone?

Y8 and Y5 heads are the same castings. Post your smog results and we can figure out what the issue is and answer these questions:

-last full tune up (cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, pvc)?
-clean EGR system?
-is the check engine light on?
-check cam timing?

Smog test results:
Ignition timing: fail
Obd system checks: fail
Guy said he thinks the obd systems were resetting every time the car was turned off but said he had no idea about it.

15mph
%co2 14.3
%o2 0.0
Hc Max 66, Ave 9, Meas 93 Fail
Co Max .57, Ave .03, Meas .65 Fail
No Max 487, Ave 67, Meas 150 Pass

25mph
%co2 14.3
%o2 0.0
Hc Max 49, Ave 6, Meas 70 Fail
Co Max .55, Ave .03, Meas . 67 Fail
No Max 774, Ave 62, Meas 202 Pass

Note I ran Premium 91 gas during this smog at Star test only center with 6btdc ignition timing which Is now corrected

Last tune up was 3 months ago by last owner but have the receipts for it but I just put in new air filter, cleaned egr, new plugs and wires.
No check engine light is on
Don't know how to check cam timing.

Your high HC could be caused by the ignition timing and possibly your cat could be not working as efficiently as it should. How does your car run normally? Does it miss or run poorly? Does your check engine light work?

The car runs very well easy 40mpg without trying with that bad timing no misfires nothing. Check engine light works pulled a sensor out light came right on turned off the car for a hour and turned it back on to see if it kept engine light code and it did for a little bit till it fixed it's self

Smog Test #2
50 degree with rainy weather
Just got back from 100 mile trip car nice and warm, filled up with 87 gas so I went for the test. Only thing I changed was ignition timing (at 12 btdc still needs adjusting), new plug wires, air filter, and ran a fuel treatment and here are the results:

%Co2 15.1
%O2 0.0
Hc Max 66, Ave 9, Meas 66 Pass (close one)
Co Max .57, Ave .03, Meas .19 Pass
No Max 487, Ave 67, Meas 135 Pass

25mph
%co2 15.1
%o2 0.0
Hc Max 49, Ave 6, Meas 46 Pass (also close)
Co Max .55, Ave .03, Meas .15 Pass
No Max 774, Ave 62, Meas 143 Pass

So I passed
So looks to me ignition timing and 87 gas affected smog quite a bit I probably could of reduced Hc more if I set the timing better ( first time ever changing ignition timing)

But still wondering about my head y5 or y8 P2J-6 98 cause if it's a y8 I should probably change my ecu

If I recall, the Y5 has roller rockers while the Y8 does not.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm going to say your correct on that I just didn't want to take the valve cover off to check the rockers due to the lack of tools at my disposal and wouldn't want to mess anything up.
I know the P2J-6 head with 97 to the right is a y8 head but mine says 98 to the right don't know if that makes a difference or if it's just the year and makes no difference. I would hope its a y8 head cause I want to do a mini me swap anyways so would mean all I would have to do is switch the ecu

The 97 and 98 to the right is the year of the cast - doesn't really matter. Yes, roller rockers and the cam profile are the only differences. A valve cover is easy to remove. It should be either a few 8mm or 10mm acorn nuts holding it on. Pull it and post some pics of the rockers.
