I started working on cars when I was 5. I would help my dad do oil changes and valve adjustments on his volkswagen bug. I also did 2 years of autoshop in highschool and a semester of small engine repair at a JC by my house. Other than that just read shop manuals for whatever car/bike I'm working on. Sometimes I would look to the internet for info.

I'm mechanically inclined, and know my way around a book.
So i bought the manual for the car, and busted out the wrenches.

Blowing up the motor on my '93 Civic. Didn't have a lot of money so I bought a D15B from some Japanese motor place.
Always been hands on with my cars though. Love that ****. "Old wrenches don't die, they just become programmers"

I've always pulled everything apart, and putting it back together again.
My car was no different. I take everything apart. It's just the way I is. |

my dad is a mechanic. I learned by hanging out with him in the garage. everything from monster trucks to morgans would roll through our driveway.

This. I also did the computer thing. I wouldn't even so much say I was poor as I'd say I was cheap.
And this.

I used to play with Legos as a child, so I had a natural tendency to take things apart and put them back together. That's how I learned.

Mostly trial and error. Lots of internet articles. A little bit of guidance from friends/relatives. I'm not a master mechanic, but I have done extensive suspension upgrades on a couple of cars, bolt-ons, guage/stereo installation, basic maintenance, brakes, etc.
