Icon6 17 year old girl needs help rebuilding D Series

Like my attention grabber?
Well, my dad ran his ek civic motor hot for like 200 miles and it finally gave in and 'blew up'...Since then this car has been sitting around being useless for months now.
One of my friends found a new motor for me but due to his shop being full he's not going to rebuild it for me.
He says not to order any parts until I figure out what's wrong with it.
...no idea how to do that.
I think I need a water pump...and someone to tell me what to do.
Help?

Idk, it was ran hot as ****.
It wouldn't hold water. I heard something about the block being cracked.
I'm going to go out side and turn the key and tell you what kind of sound it makes.
the starter was replaced a couple of months ago

If its got a cracked block youll need a new block. Also the cause was most likely a blown head gasket caused by a coolant system problem. so yes youll need to check water pump, radiator, hoses, etc. to see what happened. post pics if you can.

If the engine was severely overheated, it's a lost cause to rebuild. Start shopping for a replacement.

I have a replacement motor. I just don't know where to start. It's just sitting at my friends shop.

So your Dad wants you to see if the "blown up" motor can be fixed?

Start by observing the motor's behavior. Is there radiator fluid in the radiator? Is there a mixing of radiator fluid and oil anywhere in the motor? Is there anything leaking out of the motor? What did the car do? Does the car run. Is there steam coming out of the tail pipe? You need to provide more information. For us to help you.

It overheated for 200 miles so it is possible the head warped, and now it needs to be re-surfaced, and a new head gasket needs to be installed. Aluminum heads do not respond well to high heat.

Edit: Okay now there are 6 other posts to this thread after I posted. Most of what I said has already been answered. Sounds like you established the motor is dead. So your new motor also has problems? Or you just want to rebuild it for good measure?

Your replacement motor doesn't sound like a very good one. What do you know about it? Might it also have been severely overheated? It may save you time, frustration, and money to shop for a more reliable one.

I told him I would go ahead and order new plugs and wires, and a new head gasket for the motor and he told me to wait to buy things until I know whats wrong with THAT motor. Well, he said I need a distributor.

He got it for a 100, and my paycheck for this week was a little over that, and my slack parents are just letting the ek sit there. My poor sympathetic Honda loving heart wants it to run.

he said this new motor would shut off.

I agree with RonJ. If you're questioning this new motor, shop for one you know is good. The nice thing about D series motors is they are a dime a dozen. You should have no problem finding one in good condition for around $400. It will cost you a lot more to rebuild a broken one, then it would cost to find one in good condition and buy it.

First and foremost, we need to know details about the "replacement" engine. What year civic is the replacement from? What year are you planning on transplanting it into? What do you plan on spending on fixing the replacement engine? A used JDM engine from a reputable company is often cheaper than rebuilding a bad engine.

Yeah it would be a lot cheaper and easier to find a used D series from a reputable salvage yard then rebuild. An engine shutting off could be caused by a lot of problems. Could be the ECU could be a fuel prob, could be a many number of things
Where are you located?

The D16Z6 is an OBD1 engine and you have an OBD2 Civic. I some states, it's illegal to make that type of engine swap (older engine into newer car).

Without the engine installed in the car, you can primarily only address potential mechanical problems.

Find out what the laws are in Georgia regarding engine swaps.

The easiest swap for you is the same as the original engine -- shop for a 96-98 Civic D16Y8 engine. Does your car have a manual or auto transmission?

Find an LKQ in Jenkensburg and get a used engine from them.
