1989 Accord auto transmission problems
Hi,
I have a 1989 Accord w/ 230,000 miles on it.
As I was driving about 30mph it slipped into neutral. I can still drive it in 1st and 2nd gear if I start in D2 for 1st gear and i downshift into D1 for 2nd gear. park and reverse work fine.
I cleaned out the shift solenoids and it did nothing.
Is it possible it is the TCM?
If so, I would greatly appreciate some advice on how to locate it and replace it.
Thank you,
Bob

Huh...I'm lost one this, sorry. Sounds like D2 gives you first and D1 gives you second???? The ECU is under the drivers seat, view from te back seat...however I don't think it checks the trans....Have you checked the linkage, the throttle control cable....and last, DX, LX or LXi.

Poorman212,
My Accord is an LX. And yes D2 starts me off in first gear and then I shift into 2nd by down shifting into D1. If i leave it in D1 it stays in 2nd - no matter what.
No, I haven't checked the linkage or the throttle control cable.
This is my first Honda, I've owned it for 8 years and 85,000 miles and this is the first time I've had to do anything except for routine maintenance.
I appreciate any input!!!
I will check the transmission linkage and throttle control cable tomorrow. What should I be looking for?
Thanks a lot,
Bob

Re: 1989 Accord auto transmission problems
I doubt it is the throttle control cable, ususally causes shifting issue and it sounds like you are having issues selecting gears...
Inside the console is the shift cable adjustment, hope you have a book/manual for the exact alignment...I'll try to describe the best I can...There is type of "collar" connecting the shift cable. There is a "dimple" that has to line up. Hope it is in the end, the other end is in the bell housing...ie have to seperate the engine and trans to get to it..and of course the fluid is full
