Been hearing commercials and it's some sort of tracking device that you "snap" into your vehicle. It records speed & position for sure. I'm pretty sure it includes tracking of accel/decelerations. It likely records much more such as time of travel, distance, etc. They are marketing it saying that you can get discounts off your insurance.

Would probably get my rates raised before I had a chance to get the discount.

Aren't you an insurance agent, and probably not for Progressive? A little biased, perhaps?

I've been a customer with them for 2 years now and last fall a tree fell onto my wife's car totaling it. They handled it promptly and quite well IMO.

Little biased. And no not for progressive. Glad you had a good experience! Simple claims should always get handled efficiently, im talking about major injury claims and such... I shouldnt have said that tho, so i respectfully take it back.

JD power ratings...

THey are right in the middle. Allstate actually is rated a lot worse (tho they have good marketing, you wouldnt think that..)

as an ex-property agent I'll just say that discount isn't much, new, or helpful. More than likely you'll speed going through an area with high traffic accident volume, school zone when the kids are in class, and no one drives 55 on the freeway.

Not sure of all the details, but im assuming if you tell them you commute x miles / day and will drive x miles / year and are over that you will get a hefty bill for the difference...

I have 3 policies with progressive right now and looked it up. Qualifing questions:
Do you drive less than 30 miles per day?
No one drives less than 30 miles a day. Its virtually impossible to work, school, or home with in that commute. Almost every property company uses 15k miles a year as the average yearly trip calculation. If you keep it under that then either your retired or don't live in a large metropolitan area.
I clicked no and its an automatic dis-qualifier.Now if you have a car you don't use all the time I might suggest using it on that car.
Do you avoid driving between midnight and 4 a.m.?
Yes, but weekends?
Do you avoid sudden stops?
Everyone tries, but good luck on avoiding life.

I had awesome experiences with Progressive. I wrecked crx. I stopped using them. I started again. Stopped again. I had S2000 broken into.

Very prompt and fair compensation was given. My only regret is that S2000 wasn't broken into more times.

Interesting questions....
I can understand the Midnight to 4 am thing.
SUdden stops? SO this thing must read the amt of times someone makes sudden stops as well, im assuming going by the speed readings.. I wouldnt be too comfortable having that thing in my car..

Most people dont drive less than 30 miles, but i would say the majority of the people that call me for a quote say they work "less than 5 miles from home". Most people BS the stuff I ask them anyway so i think even if they qualified for the discount up front, it wont stick when they review at renewal...

I drive about three miles a day with my current job. Even if I go out it's unlikely I'll add another 27 miles. I live in the Puget Sound area, but I have a job that's very close to my house.

I don't avoid driving between midnight and 4am though. I've always been a night owl, though lately I haven't been out much during those hours.

I avoid sudden stops. Can't remember the last panic stop I had to make.

Progressive (NYSE: PGR) today began national advertising for its Snapshot Discount, an industry-leading Pay As You Drive program that offers drivers the chance to lower their car insurance rates by as much as 30 percent based on real-time analysis of their driving habits.

Snapshot brings together leading-edge technology and Progressive’s passion for saving drivers money, creating a one-of-a-kind program that can offer drivers substantial savings on their car insurance. Over the past few years that Progressive has been testing and refining its Pay As You Drive program, also known generically as usage-based insurance, more than a quarter of a million drivers have participated. This, in combination with analysis of more than 2 billion miles driven, has led the company to where it is today — poised to make Snapshot available to drivers countrywide. Drivers currently enrolled in the optional program are already saving an average of $150 per year.

“Do you think you’re a better driver than your car insurance company gives you credit for?” asked Progressive President and CEO Glenn Renwick. “Today I'm issuing a challenge to drivers across the country. Get a quote from Progressive and send us a ‘snapshot’ of your driving habits, and see what happens. At worst your rate stays the same. But you could end up saving up to 30 percent on your car insurance. This is the biggest discount Progressive has ever offered.”

Renwick said with Snapshot, drivers finally have the chance to pay for car insurance based on how they drive, not how others drive. People who drive less, in safer ways and during safer times of day are most likely to get a discount.
Interesting. I wonder if I could trade cars with my mom for a month .

No working OBD2 in my car though .

I guarantee if I did it there is no way they would offer me a discount... I use my brakes heavily, I drive fast, I travel during peak and late at night times. But I've never been at fault in an accident . It's kind scary insurance companies are going to start wanting this data to make a policy for you though :S.
