- What sort of performance are you looking for?
- What is your budget?
- Do you care if it's legal? If so, check to see if local laws might count out some swaps (such as CRV engines are considered light truck engines and not allowed to be swapped into passenger cars in some areas).
- Do you want boost with this swap?
- What skill level are you looking for for the swap itself (wiring, etc.)?
Look at the positive and negative points of each swap.
A V6 sleeper might sound like a great idea... until you figure out that J-series isn't fitting in there without a giant hole cut in the hood. Sleeper status negated... at least a little.
An ITR engine might sound perfect... until you look at the price tag.
A K-series might sound neat. You'd be a bit different from those B and D-series swaps. But all those custom parts start adding up.
The tried and true B, D and H-series swaps are, well, tried and true. But maybe you want something a little different and you can afford it financially and you can afford the downtime.
For some, picking out the right engine might be as much as, "I like this engine, but want VTEC." If so, then you might be happy with a D16Z6 or D16Y8. Others might be happy as long as they have a DOHC in there. An easily found inexpensive LS could be their answer.
Good luck with you decision. And remember that you don't need to buy the first engine you find! If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And read up on any company before you buy from them!

Re: what engine should i use
Yeah you gotta narrow it down a bit.
Whats your budget? are you doing it yourself? if so how much experience do you have? What resources do you have?
Then it should be pretty easy to figure out what you want.
If unlimited budget and resources, then a jdm k20 itr swap is very nice.
