Default when is the best time to drive up highway 1?

I'm going out to california and landing in san diego, we want to drive up to san fransisco during the week. If we leave san diego in the morning say six, would we hit less traffic during the week or the weekend?

If you leave san diego around 6am during the week, traffic will suck moderately on the way up to LA but right when you start getting into LA is going to be hell. If you leave at 6am from San Diego, you will be hitting LA at the rush hour prime at 8am.....Terrible dealing with that traffic. I haven't messed around with LA traffic too much but i've had my run ins.

One of the times I was in Long Beach, I was trying to get back to San Diego on a Friday afternoon around 2pm.....I hit major traffic and didn't get down to SD until 7:30pm. It's normally 2 hours to get form Long beach to SD.

PCH is traffic during the weekdays during normal rush hours, 6am-9am & 4pm-6pm. Weekdays are much better until you roll through San Clemente, Laguna Beach and New Port. If you really want to drive during the weekday I suggest rolling out before 6am so you will be passing LA before rush hour.

hwy 1? i dont think that crosses LA it passes like around huntington beach but not like real LA. youd be crazy to drive all hwy 1 to SF.
probably would take you like 8-10 hrs. keep in mind that hwy 1 is like a street in some towns. id recommend interstate 5.

i would recommend taking interstate 5 until you hit hwy 152 go west (which is around monterey bay) then get on hw1 north all the way up to sf thats the most scenic IMHO it will be like 5-6 hrs on 5 then like 1 on 152 west then another 1-2 hrs on HWY scenic

Look up Big Sur. I drove from San Luis Obispo/Solvang to Monteray, very cool drive.

yeah, take 101 as far as santa barbara, stop there for early lunch / breakfast at sambo's or esaus coffee shop. then head up to pismo and hit the 1 there. from there you get a great drive up past hearst castle, carmel/ monterey and some great scenery. be aware that lots of CA coast is mist shrouded to middayish so you may not want to be on 1 till then.

You're right hwy 1 starts before LA, right after San Clemete to be exact. So yea you wouldn't hit traffic from LA but like others have said it'd be better to go up the 5 a little further before going straight to the 1. It's 30mph in some sections so unless you want to be in your car ALL day then i'd suggest going a slightly different route before going to the 1.

PCH turns into Sepulveda, then you gotta find your way back to the 1

I'd get on PCH in Santa Monica and drive up there, if there was no traffic, that's a nice place to start.

Don't forget to factor in the fog. It could be a very long drive.

If you end up short on time and changed your mind. 880-101-152-5 = Win. Instead of 1.

Interstate 5 is by far faster. You can go 80 mph no problem

PCH if I remember correctly is not that straight of a highway. There will be some winding roads here and there and you will be forced to slow down for many parts. In addition I think its at least 75 miles longer.

Your only major points of traffic will be through OC and LA county. I think the only time of the day those places will be clear is between 2 am and 4 am weekdays.

Again, to point out. "Faster" means maybe 7 hrs from SF-SD. So even that gets old after the 3hr hour. Hwy 1 is great on a sunny day when you want to do a 2 hr road trip. Weather and traffic and crazy CA drivers will put a damper on the Spirit of Motoring, if the trip becomes 10+ hrs.

i've ridden a SV650 up to the bay from LA on the 5. going up wasn't so bad. coming home 2 days later was awful. just too long to be sitting in a saddle getting buffeted by wind on a naked bike. not even sure how i got home, i forgot everything from the tejon pass to my house.

that sort of defeats the purpose of taking hwy one, don't you think? by the time you hit the 152 you're parallel to san jose, so you want to take PCH up 40 miles through half moon bay into the city? what's the point?

if i were making this trip, i'd take the 5 to san clemente, and time it so that you're rolling through LA Metro after 10 am or before 6am. meaning you don't have much scenery on that part of the ride. Otherwise, i'd take 101 up to the ventura area and hook up with PCH up there, where it's less busy, and it's much more scenic. stop for breakfast in solvang. time it so you hit big sur in the late afternoon and stop to take in the view.

i've made the trip from LA to the bay on PCH and it took 10 hours, with a few stops.

THIS!!! But you have to leave SD so that you can clear the morning LA traffic.

PCH is really cool, but as a 1 lane road, you tend to get stuck behind slow trucks and stuff. I got stuck behind a lambo and Z06 behind a cement truck going 20...... wah wah
