'00 Civic ex D16Y5 AUTO(blew HG) TO 96 ex D16Y8 AUTO (engine donor)CEL,D4.
Hey guys would appreciate some clarification on swap compatibility. Heres the deal. I recently purchased a 2000 civic ex that had a blown head gasket and high miles(275k) but a beautiful body and interior. It had the stock D16Y5 engine and auto trans. Prior to buying that i had got a '96 civic ex D16Y8 with 161k, rough shifting auto and front end damage for misc. Parts i needed for my '00 dx. A buddy of mine who knew a little bit about honda swaps helped me to put the D16Y8 engine into the '00 ex and because of the rumored rough shifting on the D16y8 auto we decided to keep the original trans in the '00. Upon completing the swap we started the car and it ran a little choppy with the D4 flashing and the check engine light on. We assumed it just hadn't circulated the trans fluid completely and moved ir around the yard a little and added fluid accordingly. Upon the third startup it banged into gear loudly and then refused to engage. Any advice on where we went wrong? We now have learned that we needed to mate the ecu from the D16Y8 to the motor. Did we blow the differential? Should we pull the Y5 tranny and try the Y8? Thanks for your timely response we been at it a week and just wanna be done..

Your buddy is not smart at all. The d16y5 uses a cvt transmission, no other model uses that transmission. Please tell us the real reason you stuck with the cvt.

Ouch tony you dont gotta be a jerk..i told you the real reason was because the prior owner of the 96 told me it was kinda rough shifting and i had test driven the '00 right before the head gasket blew and it shifted fine. Not to mention the only info i had found was a comparison of the two trannys that stated the y5 was the better of the two. No where i looked said the two weren't compatible and in all fairness we may have made a judgement call out of haste, but doesn't mean my friend isn't smart nor i. just means there is a lot of combinations and details that aren't necessarily easy to obtain info on. That being said, thanks for your clarification, but you still leave me with a lot of questions unanswered. Mainly where do i go from here?

Don't get your feelings hurt if you are looking for real help. You have a Frankenstein Civic with an ECU that is a mismatch for both the engine and transmission.

Thanks for all the input but after the frustration of mismatches .i just went ahead and did the auto to manual swap and got a manual ex ecu that matches my engine and tranny. Runs like a dream now.
