Default Power steering cooler, is it necessary?

Is the power steering cooler necessary, the one that mounts in front of the a/c condensor onto the radiator support? I'm trying to tuck my a/c and p/s steering hoses and lines, and was thinking of bypassing the p/s cooler.

As I recall, LS does not have, GSR has a loop, and Type R has a loop with some cooling fins. I think that part of the problem is that at higher rpms, the pumping generates heat. You could drive the system less, different pulley size, or try without. Not necesssarily a good idea if you track or hold at higher rpm.

I don't really see how the GSR "cooler" would even be effective. Like you said, it's basically a U shaped pipe mounted in front of the a/c condenser. There aren't any fins or large surface area to help dissipate heat.

A loop of aluminum tubing with full air flow could dissapate just enough heat to keep things below cooking temp. I was told that on a track, that the PS pump bearing and seal, and hose crimp, metal to rubber, take a beating on the LS and that the cooler is enough to help that. I guess some engineer put it there for a reason, the number crunchers would have stopped otherwise.

If you really must go without it, i would run a good full synthetic PS fluid with a high boiling point instead.

I think it depends on how you drive the car. For the roads and daily driving, i don't think you need P/s cooling. however, if it was designed into the car it must be there for a reason. So i would keep it unless its broken or you are removing the p/s compleatly. I go to hpde's alot and have noticed that the p/s resivor gets extreamly hot after a 30 min session. If i ever were to boil the fluid i would add some cooling, but i haven't yet. I will be switching fluids to a more high temp. is there an easy way to flush/bleed the power steering system???

Again, I have heard of problems with the PS hose cooking at the metal rubber interface, that could happen before boiling. I would use the cooler unless for casual DD. RPM's to the pump seem to cause the temperature, and of course nobody revs, right??

i removed mine when i changed all my power steering lines to an fittings and hoses no problems as of 10,000 miles

Where do you live? How hot do your summers get? Here in cali, 115 oF in summer isn't uncommon.
