Default Tell me about Asheville North Carolina; good place to live?

Can anybody tell me about Asheville NC? I know there are some great houses and places to rent for cheap.. but what about colleges? Are there any colleges for IT? Are there lots of IT jobs? How is the cost of living? Are things close by or a haul to get to (groceries, gas, shopping etc)?

Matt

only been through asheville twice and I've "heard" lots of good things about it...and bad things. just like all kinds of cities.

why dont you just take a week vacation and drive around and try to experience it if you have the chance?

I will say one thing though. we only have a single person in our resident post in asheville even though we've had a long standing "open hiring position" there. nobody ever applies though and those that have been pushed to try to lateral over there have threatened to quit before moving there lol.

I've been there two times, around the area of the biltmore estate. And thats all I needed to see to know that place would awesome to live. It's so "old tyme" and old and seemingly friendly. I'm finding houses and other places to rent that are huge and decently priced.. the only thing I'm worried about it finding a college that supports an IT degree being close.
And why have people threatened to quit when "threatened" to go to asheville lol

yeah biltmore is nice lol. ony thing that really turned me off about asheville was the second time I went there it was to pick up a mustang shell and the area was right off the west merge of I-40 and the I-240 loop. I pulled off the highway and passed a supermarket where it seems every redneck in the world was having their "parking lot meet" it was just plain weird to see jacked up F150's doing burnouts with camaros and such.

Asheville is ok. Cost of living is pretty high.

Dude if only you knew.. I'm finding HOUSES for rent.. 2100-2400sq/ft, 5br, 3.5 bathroom, 2 car garages, right off the river. These houses ALSO come with 20' pontoon boats and a paddle boat AND a canoe. They are all rented with the house. I'm finding such awesome places there.

I can deal with some rednecks. They dont bother me too much But that whole town right outside the biltmore is soooo awesome. Such an old country town. It's cute. Or is that not manly enough? Ok it's quaint.

It is? I'm finding 2000+sq/ft HOUSES for rent for less than 2 grand a month. I'm finding 1500sq/ft homes for like 1200 a month. Thats cheap to me!!

really?

well that probably explains why our position never gets filled there haha. they get the same cost of living increase over base pay that we get here in charleston...though here, a beer at a bar is like $1-$2. I remember when I was living in atlanta, a draft beer at a bar was $4.50

If you lived in Candler, Canton, Waynesville or even Hendersonville it would be a little cheaper and A'ville is within a 15-20 min drive from each

I was checking to live in some of those places. I need to find a good school that has an IT program and a college with some sort of medical assisting program :\

I have a 1600 sq/ft home (3BR 2BH 2car garage, bonus room) on 0.6 acres around $800/mos. I have a friend in A'ville with a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1 car garage townhome 1370sq/ft (0.0 acres) for just over $1000/mos. So yeah cost of living is higher.

Holy. Shit. 800$ a month for your place?? Thats nuts. Is that rented or owned though? Because owning is almost always cheaper.

I pay a tick over 1500$/month for a very similar configuration to your home right now for my condo but with no land

Are you saying there is money to be made there, or if you had the money you'd move there? I'm asking what exactly about that place is luring to you (unless you meant the money)

If I had the money I'd move there. Everytime I go to visit I do not want to leave. Seems like the most relaxed peaceful place on the planet. If you enjoy nature and the beauty of the earth, I'm sure you would love it, not to mention the fun roads you get to drive on.
