Thats crazy!!! Gotta agree though, it is kinda funny... Guess I should get my IPG scatter shield out of my parts room, and actually put it on my car...

hahaha, watched it like 10 times as well. Absolutely destroyed that car. I mean the front basicly flew off. Thats a lot of money in just repairs to the car itself.
I have my scattershield ready for my car. Although i have never seen it happen in person and its a rare thing. But im using a Competition Twin disk clutch/flywheel setup and ive yet to see one of those ever come loose like that as long as your bolts are properly torqued down.
Crazy stuff.

that had to have been the WHOLE flywheel to do that, lol. What im trying to picture is what happened. loose flywheel bolts ? flywheel crack in half? starter ring come off?and how did the pressure plate get separated from the flywheel? this would be a good learning experience if we could find out what happened. That guy is very lucky.

stock flywheels are cast and normally have alot of use on them, so stress cracks are common
this also happened to a friend of mine using a brand new aluminum flywheel
obviously aluminum isnt going to be as strong as a forged piece or cromoly...
aluminum flywheels are known for allowing the bolts to back out as well

sure pressure plates can explode as well, but when they do they come apart like that flywheel not just a couple fingers
the fingers could have triggered the flywheel explosion, but this distruction is without a doubt the result of that flywheel coming apart...
i still find it funny how the bumper flew off in front of the car and the hood blew open as it did haha i dont think it could have been scripted any better or funnier lol sorry...

Throw a little locktite on the bolts when installing the flywheel and let it go!!
I believe that I have probably seen more instances on a stock crank breaking rather than a flywheel exploding.
It sucks that dudes car got thrashed, but it was funny.....probably watched it 20 times in a row. He is probably sitting back laughing at it himself.

Re: CRX KABOOOOM (WHY YOU SHOULD USE SCATTER SHILED)
Well, I have used nothing but stock flywheels for the past 10 years or so. On my new K20 setup (stock engine) all I got with the swap is an aluminum flywheel. So Im using what I got. Maybe I can post up a vid, if I live through it, of it shredding through the firewall and cutting my leg off or something. Since the tranny is on the drivers side on the K setups.

Yea, that probably wouldnt have slowed this down at all, and Itd be cheaper to make my own out of 1/4" thick strap. Just saying, someone like GE should make one for the D. And its already been discussed. That blanket wouldnt pass NHRA rules.
