Warm the car up to normal operating temp. There is usually a label under the hood with preliminary checks to perform before setting the timing, such as setting the idle correctly. Jump the little blue connector next to the ECU. Connect the pickup of a timing light to the plug wire closest to the timing belt. Start the car and point the timing light at the crankshaft pulley. There is a notch on the plastic timing belt cover that you will need to line up with the mark on the crakshaft pulley. When you squeeze the timing light trigger at normal idle speed, the light will flash each time the number one plug wire sends its spark. You want the mark on the timing cover to line up with the middle of the three lines next to each other on the pulley for standard ignition timing. Stop the car, loosen the distributor and turn it one way or the other to line up the timing marks on the pulley and cover. Start the car, re-check at normal idle speed and re-adjust until the timing is correct.
