Re: Fill Manual Transmission Fluid... Stripped Filler Bolt
Can someone tell me what the thread pitch is for the filler bolt???
Scooped the car up a few months ago, trying to change the fluids. Just did the engine oil, need to do the trans ASAP.

Can someone tell me the thread pitch for the fill bolt, is it the same as the drain bolt???
scooped the car up a few months back, planned on changing the fluids. Got around to the engine oil and when I went to take a crack at the trans I noticed the fill bolt was stripped. Need a replacement before I put the vice grips to work. I’d appreciate if I got some input.

the fill bolt is 20mm but you should only use and buy factory hardware. honda does not use generic bolts, theyre all made specific of the application.
https://estore.honda.com/honda/parts...n=&b=M++02&dl=
and its $4....
and, only use a 6 pt box end wrench to get that bolt off. it is a typical trouble some bolt, a 6pt box end with a cheater wrench and a good push with the legs or whatever should work. its what i often have to do.
vice grips wont work, youll just chew it up more and make it more difficult to remove.

Looking to do the same thing this weekend, what are you throwing in your transmission? My Wagon's manual says 10W-30 but I've also heard the Honda MTF is good. Is it just a preference thing or is one better than the other?

The manual is 30 years old, back then manual transmission fluid didn't exist, and they don't make engine oil like they did.
Use proper transmission fluid. Honda MTF has been reformulated too, but it's only improved.
You can use Pennzoil syncromesh too. Or whatever else out there.
I recommend Honda MTF.

I've been researching transmission fluid online and I've noticed a couple times people saying that if your transmission fluid has never been replaced, it might do more damage changing it than not changing it. Is this just a bunch of anecdotal nonsense, or is there truth to this? I have a bone stock transmission in mine, and I'm the second owner. I have no idea if the fluid was changed before I owned it.

Thank you, I'll grab some Honda MTF then.

In theory. Never seen this happen.

Those anecdotes apply to automatic transmissions not manual. In theory there’s enough worn clutch material suspended in the ATF to keep everything engaged and not slipping. Once you drain all that suspended clutch material and add in fresh oil - there’s no friction which results in slippage.
