High Mileage and Oil
Does High Mileage Engine eat Oil? My Car has Closed to 280,000 miles mostly Freeway Miles and recently I made an Oil change.
Long Story short about a week of driving I check my Oil and its nowhere on the mark on the dip stick, check under the engine no leaks or whatsoever so does this mean that my engine is eating Oil?
Do I need to have the engine rebuilt or replace or is this common for high mileage engine?

I think if you were burning it that fast, you would have the environmental wackos chasing you for the clouds of blue smoke you'd be putting out. Fill the crankcase as necessary, clean the engine, top and bottom (take a floor jack with you to the local self serve car wash late at night, jack it up and spray away, engine cleaner would help). Drive it a bit, then get under it to look for oil leaks. Remember it will tend to flow down and back, so follow oil up and forward.
Pull your plug wires, the spark plug holes may be full of oil, there are seals where the rocker mounts/cam holders mount to the head as well as the ones between the valve cover and head. With that many miles, this is a good bet whether it is your main problem or not.
Check to make sure the seal from the old oil filter didn't stick to the block.
Check the area around the oil pressure switch.

Re: High Mileage and Oil
What grade oil are you using? A light weight oil in a worn engine will burn oil very quickly; older engines with a moderate amount of wear will do better on heavier "high mileage" formulations.

Re: High Mileage and Oil
Will switching to High Mileage Oil or Thicker Oil work on not the engine to burn oil that fast!
I have to point also that I commute around 100 miles a day! Is this normal for the engine to burn that fast?
