Sounds to me like your referring to the charcoal canister contraption that vents gas fumes into your intake manifold. If it is what I'm thinking of, it is fairly easy to remove. What car do you have?

Allright, that helps a bit. You should have something like this (i'm not certain what year accord this photo came from)

Basically, the charcoal setup stores excess fuel vapor from your gas tank due to expansive pressure buildup within the tank. When the pressure reaches a point, a solenoid (likely as mentioned in the picture 'two way valve') opens allowing the pressure to drain into the 'evap control canister.' This charge is stored inside the canister until there is appropriate engine vacuum. At that point, the ecu actuates another solenoid ('evap purge control...') thereby feeding the fuel vapor into your intake manifold via a port on the top of your throttle.

Your cel suggests that it is detecting a leak somewhere in that setup. So trace along the specific vacuum lines associated with the evap system and see what you can find...

Please note: I have never worked on, nor owned an Accord so take this information at your own risk.

Hmm, white smoke can be construed as coolant burning inside your combustion chamber. On the other hand, I can't think of any reason why an emission control system (cel) would have anything to do with that.

A lot of people would probably tell you to do a leakdown test and check your compression... Check your oil for impurities (such as coolant).

For your code, I'd try a new gas cap first
