Icon4 Coworkers speaking foreign language in the workplace.? Does it bother you?

related to a previous thread.

What are your thoughts or experiences with people in groups speaking in different languages in the work place ?

I understand it shouldnt bother anyone if they had a hard time speaking english, but here, they speak english perfectly. Its obvious that they speak this way when they dont want others to understand what they are talking about. For example, one of them will come up to me and ask me something, and then when they are done, they go to their buddy and start saying something, and I hear them refer to a word that relates to what they were talking to there last conversation in english and they will start laughing. this is an everyday thing. far too many convos have passed through a few of us that we've managed to catch a few discussions that talk about others in gossip.

cool story broham! discuss...

on topic: a couple (husband and wife) at my work are always yelling at each other in Russian. It doesn't bother me but sometimes I want to know what they are saying.

ugggh.

I sit next to this orthodox kid (I say kid, but he's married with, yes, 6 kids) who speaks on the phone with his wife ALL DAY LONG. She has to call him before she makes ANY purchase, whether it's something new at the grocery store, or anti-scratch coating at the eye doctor, for her kid's glasses, or....the list goes on, and on, and on.

Usually they speak English, unless they're in a disagreement (almost always), or unless they're talking about something shady (another story altogether), in which case they resort to the Hebrew.

I really can't say enough terrible things about this kid. I thought I had it bad before, when I sat next to this fat nasty male secretary, but this is wayyy worse. FML.

The cooks at my work pretty much only speak Spanish. It is annoying as hell when I need to tell them something.

Also, the ones that do speak English always talk **** about people in Spanish... That's pretty annoying.

It bothers me... I work in a small office where I'm the only white guy. Everyone else speaks Korean as a first language. It drives me nuts when they do it in front of me, especially when they're talking about me.

No, I'm not paranoid. I'll hear my name in the conversation... Then, 40 seconds later, someone will summarize it for me (out of pity?).

The **** extends to office lunches. Imagine sitting there while EVERYONE ELSE at the conference table speaks Korean.

FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

I hate this place.

I don't even notice anymore.

We did have a Japanese guy working here that loved languages. He spoke perfect spanish which he learned in 2 years in Mexico, which is impressive considering that this job is done all in English. When he came to Saudi he went about studying Arabic.

He was asking two Arab guys to do something, and they were basically saying "don't worry about that little sh*t, we'll do it later" in Arabic. So he interrupts them, in perfect Arabic, and says "You think I don't speak Arabic? I do, and I speak it better than you do."

Needless to say, they did not expect this out of a Japanese guy and fell all over themselves apologizing.

i find it very annoying when tryin to speak to someone that barely speaks english. imo why would even come here if you could not speak any english? it doesnt really make things easier.

just the other day i saw a guy with the bumper sticker that said "THIS IS AMERICA!! SPEAK ENGLISH!!" i chuckled to myself at the light

we work in an office of 50 + staff

those of us who only speak the main languages in this part of town "english/spanish" we try to have some courtesy for others of only speaking english but it doesnt help when smaller groups are speaking in 3rd languages when its obvious that its not work related.

we try to deal with it, but nobody likes to know that one is being disrespected.

This is one of the most deepest issues at some workplaces. IMO , for some bizarre reason, when people are speaking in a language other than English, we believe they are talking about us. How we’ve come to think that others have nothing better to do then talk about us, I’ll never know. We’re not that important! right.
