Default Is it better to turn off a plasma tv, or to leave it on and shut off cable box?

Educated answers only please.

My dad says its better to leave it on, as turning it off and on wears it out quicker, but I prefer to leave the cable box on and turn off the tv as I'd rather not burn up all my plasma or whatever (limited hours on them).

Which is the correct way of doing it?

Matt

The box is much cheaper than the plasma so I would choose to shut the Plasma TV off.

don't forget to take into account the power you are consuming by leaving the plasma TV on. They suck up a fair amount of power.

http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/lea...er.html?page=2

For example, if you use the Samsung PN58B860 powered on for 6 hours a day you're looking at 6 bucks a month (assuming 10cent/kw hour).

Leaving it on for 24 hours a day and you are at 25 bucks a month (~$230 extra a year) in additional energy costs alone. That $230 doesn't even begin to account for the additional wear/tear on the screen itself. I would have to imagine you would be better served turning it off when you're not using it.

2 other DVR's and 1 TIVO never had to do this........

I say turn off the Plasma for both the power savings and screen life of the TV.

Turn them off. It used to be said that for a PC it was better to leave it on, rather than turn it on or off. I don't think it matters.

I leave the DVR on sometimes, but that thing is technically always on. TV, always turn it off.

Leave it on. Leave everything on. We should never have designed an off button. Why would anyone want to turn anything off?

Fyi I leave my car running in the garage all night. Never have to worry about wearing out the starter that way.

I actually cut my power supply to my TV

I know lcd's use a decent amount of power even in idle.

It actually heats up my entire living room. Not only am I wasting energy on my TV, but my AC system is working more because of the extra heat.

Is this one of those "wives tales" threads?

Holy sweet God, if you turn your TV off, it's going to break! Don't ever turn off the TV.

How stupid can you get?

Turn the damn TV off when you're not using it. Read the damn manufacturer's instructions. You should never leave a TV on for more than 8 - 10 hours at a time. If you are leaving the TV on around the clock, whether or not there is any input, the TV is going to burn out exponentially faster.

But hey. What do the manufacturers know? They only created the damn thing!

Your dad is an idiot. You tell him that for me.

And turn the cable box off too!!! Why the hell do you need all these machines running while you're NOT WATCHING TV?!?!??!!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!

And as for the rest of you guys who are worried about energy consumption, do a little research.

Plasma TVs consume energy when they are turned off. The average household spends $150 - $200 per year on their energy bill FOR THEIR PLASMA TV BEING TURNED OFF.

If you are even going to pretend like you care about saving energy, put your TV and cable box on a surge protector switch, and shut the whole thing off at the switch after you've turned the individual machines off.

^lawl all modern electronics consume eenergy when off unless they are unplugged from the wall. power consumption is typically less than 1 watt (just enough juice to retain settings and time.
