Now there's a thought. Im about to change my valve springs, retainers and seals and thought that by just putting each cylinder at TDC as I worked through it would be good enough but the nylon would help to add some insurance. Thanks for the info.

You can rent a valve spring compressor for a $60 deposit from advanced auto

I had cascar do my head work. First quote was 250 or 300 I couldn't remember but it was for refresh head and installing springs and retainers. Second quote bumped up to 500 because I need new intake valves and valve guides includes parts and labor. So yeah just an idea.

Those won't work on B-series heads

yep, the nylon rope trick is good enough. although i've been pulling valve springs without it really. simply work at ease and take your time. just do the 4 valves at a time while piston's at TDC. meanwhile, plug the oil galleys with a small piece of rolled paper just in case the valve locks slips. use a magnetic piece to hold and pull the locks while pushing the springs down.
